1923 - 2021

Robert F. Butler, age 98, of Toledo, passed away Thursday, April 15, 2021 surrounded by his loving family at his home. He was born February 15, 1923 in Bridgeport, Connecticut to Wellington and Mildred (Furry) Butler. After graduating from DeVilbis High School Robert joined the US Air Force serving on the 421st and 504th Bombardment Squadrons during WWII. He was proud to have served his country and was honored just a few years ago for his outstanding service and bravery at Stranahan School with all his family and community present. Robert returned to Toledo after the war and attended the University of Toledo graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Business. After college he began his employment with the New York Life Insurance Company as an Insurance Agent and had a successful 74 year career. Robert met and married the love of his life, Bernadette (Knetchel) Butler on October 11, 1974 and together they raised their family in Toledo.

Robert enjoyed skiing and handball. He also enjoyed walking and did this daily for more than 38 years at the Franklin Park Mall until just a few years ago. Robert was a kind and caring man making friends everywhere he went. Talking to people was something really enjoyed. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather cherishing the time spent with his family, especially with his grandchildren.

Robert was a parishioner of St. Michael's in the Hills Episcopal Church. Previous to that, he was a longtime member of St. Mark's Church, where he was active with the choir and vestry. Robert was a past president of the Toledo Choral Society. While attending the University of Toledo he was a member of Kappa Phi.

Robert was preceded in death by parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Bernadette Butler; daughter, Kristine (Eric) Sharp, grandchildren, Faith, Logan, Dylan, Mason, Brady, Riley and Toby; Also surviving is his sister, Nancy Noll of AZ.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Roberts’s life will begin Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at Newcomer, West Sylvania Chapel, 3655 King Rd. (419-392-9500) with visitation following from 4:30-7:00 pm at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Toledo, Ohio.
