In Memory Of
Betty Jane (Hawkins) Halsey-Clark
1919 - 2017

Betty Jane (Hawkins) Halsey-Clark, a lifelong resident of Toledo, OH, passed away peacefully at her home on November 26, 2017. She was 98 and three-quarter years old.

The youngest of four siblings, she was preceded in death by her two brothers Harold (Mildred) and Carl Jr. (Vivian), and sister Virginia Hawkins; and their parents Carl and Verna Hawkins. Her first husband of 23 years, Vern E. Halsey and second husband of 21 years, Robert S. Clark also preceded her. Left to cherish a lifetime of wonderful memories of her are her five children Dan (Norma), Vern Jr., Lance (Jeanne), Timothy and Bridget (Larry); nieces, nephews, cousins, and grandchildren.

A child of the Great Depression, she valued what she had, and would make-do with what she didn’t. She helped build with her husband Vern, their first home on Home Ln., from salvaged bricks and factory windows and schoolhouse slate chalkboards from around Toledo in the 1940s. She was fiercely independent, and loved driving her car to get out often and browse and shop, and do things on her own. She was very creative and enjoyed sewing, crafting, holiday decorating, gifting, reading books especially historical novels, and tending her garden of heirloom peonies and roses in later life. The keeper of her mother's many secret recipes, her family will never again get to exactly taste the wonderful flavor of their grand, home-cooked holiday meals and cookies.

She supported her youngest children during the 1960s and 70s, while widowed, as a cafeteria worker in the Washington Local School District.

Her family would like to sincerely thank the wonderful aides who became part of her daily life in the past year. Their kindness, antics, and loving care allowed her to remain in her home and brighten our days.

The recipient of an immensely helpful corneal transplant in recent years, her family asks that donations be made in her name to Eversightvision.org, Eversight Michigan, 4889 Venture Dr., Ann Arbor, MI 48108.

Her private burial took place this past Wednesday at Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery.
