William Gaston Sr., age 93, of Toledo, Ohio, peacefully passed away at his home on May 8, 2026. Born on June 8, 1932, in Holly Grove, Arkansas, he was the second of ten children born to Sam and Mary Elizer (Valentine) Gaston. At an early age, he met the love of his life, Deborah Wright. They were married in 1952. To their union, nine children were born. The family moved to Toledo, Ohio, in 1957.
William dedicated many years to his career, including time at Owens-Illinois and later at the Dana Corporation, where he retired. He was also an ordained minister, serving his community with compassion. A man of many talents and interests, William enjoyed playing the guitar, fishing, gardening, and car mechanics. He had a passion for building and could often be found busy in his garage, creating and fixing things. When he was in the house, you would find William watching his favorite show, Sanford and Son. His most treasured activity was making memories and spending quality time with his family.
He is lovingly survived by his children, Shirley J. (John) Hughes, Charles K. (Sharon) Gaston, William Jr. (La Vivian) Gaston, Valerie F. Gaston, Dwight D. (Teneasha) Gaston, Phyllis M. (Gregory) Cunningham, Darryl F. (Doreen Jones) Gaston, Linda K. (Lester) Gaston-Fitzpatrick, and Cliff P. Gaston; along with 25 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
William was preceded in death by his wife, Deborah, parents, (Sam and Mary), and siblings, A.T. Gaston, Earnest Gaston, W.B. Gaston, James A. Gaston, Dorothy Hawkins, Johnella Adams, Elizabeth Jefferies, Viola Gaston, and Annie Mae Cheers.
Family and friends will be received at the Newcomer Funeral Home (Southwest Chapel), 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo on Tuesday, May 19, 2026 from 10:00-11:00AM. Funeral services will begin immediately after visitation at 11:00AM. Interment will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
William Gaston Sr.’s life was a testament to dedication, family love, and community service. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
