William "Bill" J. Wood

William "Bill" J. Wood, a cherished resident of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away on February 26, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on August 22, 1931, in Leipsic, Ohio, to the late Irvin and Odelia Wood. As a boy he loved to spend his summers on the farm with his grandparents and many cousins.

Bill's career began at a young age when he took a position as a bagger at the A&P Grocery store at just 14 years old. Following his childhood endeavors, he proudly served in the United States Air Force as a bomber mechanic. Upon returning from military service, he continued his career at A&P as a meat cutter. Then becoming a store manager at many locations in the area, assisting with several grand openings, before retiring in 1984 from the Bowling Green store.

Bill was known for his holiday displays. His home became a festive highlight in the neighborhood, especially during Christmas, when family, friends and neighbors would gather to take photographs of his over-the-top displays. Bill loved his lawn and gardens, creating a beautiful setting for family and friends. He also enjoyed spending time with his many long time neighbors and sharing stories.

Bill treasured many memorable experiences, including annual trips to the Smoky Mountains and several adventures to Las Vegas with his beloved wife, Shirley. They were married in 1956, and would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on June 2nd. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and fond memories.

Bill is survived by his three daughters, Linda Patterson, Julie (Mark) Funk, and Sallie (Rob) Jankowski; a brother, Rick (Cindy) Wood; his grandchildren, Greg (Tami) Patterson, Nicole (Marc) Young, Amanda (Brock) Rieger, Eric (Tracy) Funk, Danielle (Marlon Hernandez) Jankowski, and Robby (Stacy) Jankowski. He was also blessed with 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in his heart.

Bill was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Shirley Wood; his son-in-law, Michael Patterson; his brother, Robert Wood; and granddaughter-in-law, Amanda Elliott-Patterson.

Family will receive guests on Wednesday, March 4, 2026 from 2:00 pm until the start of a Memorial Service at 6:00 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home - West Sylvania Chapel, 3655 King Rd, Toledo.
