Wayne "Soupy" Campbell

October 4, 1936 — July 12, 2025

Toledo, Ohio

Wayne "Soupy" Francis Campbell, age 88, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away on July 12, 2025, at Franciscan Care Center in Sylvania, Ohio. Born on October 4, 1936, to Boyd and Olla Campbell in Mount Perry, Ohio, Wayne led a life enriched by his deep love for family, storytelling, and his dedication to his work.

Wayne embarked on his professional journey as an engineer with the railroad following his high school graduation. His career spanned nearly four decades, during which he served with New York Central, Penn Central, and finally Con Rail, where he earned the endearing nickname "Soupy." After 39 years in service, Wayne retired in 1994, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and hard work.

In addition to his career, Wayne was proud to serve his country, having been drafted into the United States Army at the age of 23. He fulfilled his duties as a Military Policeman, contributing to the safety and security of his fellow citizens.

Wayne's greatest love was undoubtedly his family. Wayne leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife, Lucy Campbell, with whom he celebrated 60 years of marriage. He is survived by daughters Laura Caddarette and Cindy Thomas. Wayne was also a cherished sibling to Russell (Tracy) Campbell, Kenneth (Phyllis) Campbell, Mary (Leon) LeMaster, Jane (John) Haynes, Ronald Campbell, and Ruth (Rob) Slagle. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Devin Crosser, Stacey (Brian) Burkette, Christa O'Hara, and Heath (Libby) Wills, as well as his great-grandchildren, Vera Crosser, Haven Crosser, Brittany Gough, Candice O'Hara, Katelyn Hughes, and Christopher Hughes, and two great-great-grandchildren. Wayne was also fond of many nieces and nephews who added joy to his life.

Wayne was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Boyd and Olla Campbell, his brother George Campbell, and his cherished son Anthony Campbell.

Throughout his life, Wayne was a great storyteller whose adventures and experiences captured the hearts of those who had the pleasure of listening. He had a wonderful way with people and never met a stranger, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. His love for animals was equally profound, reflecting a compassionate spirit that extended to all living beings.

Wayne was a skilled card player and took great pleasure in visiting the casino, enjoying the camaraderie and challenge of the games. However, in March of this year, he faced a stroke which limited his ability to continue these cherished activities.

At Wayne's request, cremation has taken place, and there will be no public visitation or service held. The family will honor his life with a Celebration of Life at a later date.

The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the nurses, nurse aides, and therapy team at Franciscan Care Center for the compassionate care they provided to Wayne during his final months. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
