Walter “Bud” Read

May 1, 1947 – October 29, 2025

Walter Nelson Read, affectionately known as Bud, age 78, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2025, at Oakleaf Village of Sylvania.

Born on May 1, 1947, in Toledo to Roger and Zelma (Busch) Read, Bud lived a life marked by quiet strength, unwavering loyalty, and deep love for his family and friends. He retired from West Park Place after ten years of dedicated service and was a faithful member of Augsburg Lutheran Church in Toledo.

Bud was a reserved and gentle soul, yet his warmth and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He never knew a stranger and maintained cherished friendships that spanned decades—from middle school through the final years of his life.

A man of many passions, Bud found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved tent camping with his family, exploring transportation museums, and collecting model trains and airplanes. His curiosity and love for travel took him across numerous states, including Ohio, Michigan, Virginia, and West Virginia, where he delighted in the beauty of nature and the open road.

Bud was an avid reader and music enthusiast, with a particular fondness for classical compositions and the timeless energy of rock and roll—especially The Rolling Stones. A history buff at heart, he was deeply interested in the Civil War and often attended reenactments, including those held at the Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont. Bud was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force serving his country during the Vietnam War.

Bud is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Judith (Abbott) Read, his devoted son, Alex Read, and daughter-in-law, Kassey David, who will carry forward his legacy of love, curiosity, and quiet strength. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Bud’s life was a testament to the beauty of simplicity, the depth of loyalty, and the joy of lifelong friendships. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
