With profound sadness, we announce that Walter W Chaput, age 78, found peace on August 26,2026, in Waterville, Ohio. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and metallurgical engineer during his lifetime. His sense of humor and kindness towards others will be greatly missed.
He was born in Iron Mountain, Michigan, on March 30, 1948, to Walter and Eileen Chaput. While seniors in high school, Walter met his wife, Kathy. They were married on August 8, 1970, and began their married life together in Defiance, Ohio. Walter was employed at General Motors Powertrain in various roles such as metallurgical supervisor, superintendent of various positions, chief metallurgist, and production manager, where he was involved in major start-up projects during his 35 years with the company.
Walter built a rewarding life centered on service, hard work, and deep dedication to his family. He served as president of the Defiance Chamber of Commerce, American Foundry Society, Ohio Cast Metals Association, Tri-State Advisory Board, the Allocation Committee for United Way, and was very active at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in many capacities. He enjoyed the YMCA family-centered programs, coaching youth sports, and attending athletic events of his children.
In his free time, Walter enjoyed golfing, hunting, games of Euchre, playing basketball on Monday nights, woodworking, reading James Patterson novels, and spending time at Clear Lake. To the disappointment of many of his close friends, he was an avid Michigan Wolverine fan and cheered them on in the Big House as a season ticket holder. His family will miss his culinary skills of crepes, omelettes, and chicken marsala.
He leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Kathy, daughter Andrea (Timothy)Williamson, daughter Nicole (Christopher) Silvers, son Stephen (Bethany) Chaput, grandchildren Drew, Lauren, Abby (Landon), Luke, Maris, Selma, and Charlotte, and a wide circle of friends. Walter will be greatly missed by his furry companion, Lambs, who he shared his love of ice cream. He is survived by his sisters, Cindy and Sandra, living respectively in Iron Mountain and Menominee, Michigan. His legacy of laughter and compassion will continue in the lives of all who loved him.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 30, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, located at 3655 King Road, Toledo, Ohio 43617.
