Vertis "Mommy" E. Freeman

Vertis E. Freeman, age 84, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully at her home on April 18, 2026. Known to many simply and lovingly as “Mommy,” Vertis was a source of warmth, strength, and unwavering love to all who knew her.

She was born on November 21, 1941, in Toledo, Ohio, to Vertis M. Russell and Delbert Dotson. Vertis was sweet, charismatic, funny, and truly lovable, leaving a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was employed with Northwestern Memorial Hospital for over 20 years, where she dedicated her time and care to others.

Vertis was also known for the simple joys that brought her happiness. She loved playing bingo and had a special gift for sewing, creating with her hands and pouring love into the things she made. These moments reflected her gentle spirit and the warmth she shared so easily with others.

Vertis was preceded in death by her parents, Vertis M. Russell and Delbert Dotson; her beloved husband, William Freeman; and her brother, James Dotson.

She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Carnell Freeman, Maurice (Michelle) Freeman, and Delbert (Angloria) Freeman; her sister, Arlene Potter; her grandchildren, Kitryane Sias-Dale of Chicago, Illinois, Wyle Dotson, Marcus Freeman, Cardan Ellis, Taylor Freeman, Ella Freeman, and Emily Freeman, all of Toledo, Ohio; along with a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and all those who were fortunate enough to know her love.

Vertis will be remembered for her nurturing spirit, her joyful personality, and the deep love she gave so freely to her family. Her presence was a constant, and her legacy will live on through the lives she touched.

The family will receive guests on Thursday, April 23, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Newcomer Southwest Chapel, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo, Ohio.
