Valentine “Tim” Pilat

December 8, 1942 – August 12, 2026

Valentine “Tim” Pilat went home peacefully to his Lord and Father at Ebeid Hospice of Northwest Ohio on August 12, 2026, following a period of illness involving stroke symptoms. Born December 8, 1942, Tim lived a full and meaningful life devoted to faith, service, family, and community.

Tim attended Salesian High School in Detroit before beginning a life of religious service. In 1963, he professed as a lay brother with the Oblates of St. Francis DeSales. He spent time in the novitiate in Childs, Maryland, where he developed a deep appreciation for community and farming. His religious service later took him to Battle Creek, Michigan; Stockton, California; back to Childs, Maryland; and ultimately to the Provincial Residence in Toledo, Ohio.

Tim continued his education at Kellogg Community College, Western Michigan University, the University of Virginia, and Catholic University.

After leaving the Oblates, Tim spent three years working in other occupations before beginning what would become a more than 30-year career with the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office. He loved his work and served his community with dedication. Throughout his career, Tim served as a shift commander on the Road Patrol, supervised the SWAT team, and, during his final six years, commanded a four-county Major Crimes Task Force. He retired from the Sheriff’s Office in 2004.

At the age of 72, Tim answered another calling. He became a seminary graduate and shepherd of the newly formed Family of Peace Lutheran Church, where he served as pastor until 2025.

In 1983, Tim married the love of his life, Beth. Together they shared a happy and fulfilling marriage, raising two children and several others along the way. His family was the center of his world, and the love he shared with them remained one of the greatest joys of his life.

Tim was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to many kinds of music, especially classical music. He sang in the choir at his church and loved building things with his hands. He found great joy in his family and in his beloved pets.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents, Valentine and Bernice Pilat; his brother, Ted Pilat; and his sister, Penny Robinson.

He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Beth; his sons, Timothy Pilat and George Pilat (Ellen); his nieces and nephews, Jim Robinson, Lisa Robinson, Carrie Blum (Michael Molyet), Megan Dopp (Eric), and Robin Ferguson (Larry); and his grandchildren, Vanessa, Timothy, Kane, Michael, Oliver, Thea, Gabriel, Summer, and Hunter.
