Thomas "Tom" Kasch, a true gentleman and unforgettable character, passed away on May 30, 2025, in his hometown of Toledo, Ohio. Born on June 16, 1939, Tom lived a life that was vigorously filled with laughter, memories, and perhaps a few cheeky misadventures.
Tom's career as a sales representative for Shrader Tire and Oil was only outshined by his thrilling side gig as a part-time drag-racer. He had an affinity for speed, which he shared fervently with anyone who would listen, often reminiscing about his exploits on the track as he gave you one of his trademark circular stories. He was a man who never met a stranger and could spin a tale to make anyone laugh, even if it meant embellishing the details just a tad.
An aficionado of baseball and a devoted lifelong fan of the Cleveland Browns and “Indians,” Tom loved nothing more than to engage in spirited discussions about his favorite teams—often to the dismay of an unprepared listener. It was undeniable, though: if Tom felt something about a topic, you were going to hear all about it, whether you had asked or not!
In perhaps some of his most endearing family memories, Tom could often be found at the pool, tossing his children into the water, laughing as they resurfaced sputtering and giggling. His traditional "whisker kisses" (also humorously referred to as "nubbs") became a cherished rite of passage for not only his kids but also those dear grandchildren who were lucky enough to bear the affectionate prickling he called a loving embrace.
Tom's adventures weren't limited to happy moments; there was also the infamous incident of Tom leaving his leg behind in a hotel room—not exactly the souvenir he hoped for! But it stood as a testament to his resilience; even while overcoming challenges in life, he never lost his sense of humor or the ability to kick butt, figuratively and quite literally, with that ever-present smile on his face.
A proud veteran, Tom served his country in the U.S. Navy from March 6, 1957, until January 7, 1960. After his service, he returned to civilian life but maintained that patriotic spirit throughout.
His educational journey began at Trinity Lutheran grade school, culminating in graduation from Macomber in 1957. Throughout his life, Tom built a wonderful legacy—not only of shared stories and countless photographs of spectacular cars but of an unwavering love for his family. He and his beloved wife, Ruth, enjoyed 63 magnificent years of marriage—a testament to their devotion and commitment to one another. Together, they nurtured their children, Michael (Janell), Sheryl Johnson (John), and Tony (Anasue), each carrying pieces of Tom's kind and humorous spirit into the world, along with a combined 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren who will forever treasure their joyful grandpa.
He is survived by his cherished wife Ruth, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his sister Mary Brushaber (Roger), and a multitude of loving nieces and nephews who were always recipients of his delightful anecdotes. Tom is welcomed fondly into the eternal celebration by his beloved parents, Mildred Dye Kasch (nee Stumbo) and Herbert Kasch.
As Tom has embarked on his final race, he would undoubtedly want us all to gather joyfully to reminisce and share stories of times well spent. A memorial service will take place at Trinity Lutheran Church on June 5th, at 2:00 PM. In typical Tom fashion, expect a gathering filled with laughter, a few tears, and likely a hastily told story about his classic car escapades. Rest easy, Tom. The world is a little dimmer without your vibrant laugh and heartwarming stories, but the memories you've left us will shine brightly forever.
