Sylvia Jane Goeke, 85, of Rossford, passed away on October 31, 2024. She was born on April 16, 1939 to Louis and Bertha (Toth) Vargo at Elyria, OH. Sylvia attended Elyria High School graduating class of 1957. She earned her BS in Education from Bowling Green State University and taught 5th grade at Lancaster County, PA. Over the years she also taught at Owens Community College, Penta County Vocational School, and Rossford High School.
On June 4, 1961, Sylvia married Richard "Dick" Goeke in Perrysburg, Ohio. Together they raised their three sons, where she helped with t-ball, paper routes, Cub Scouts, and many other community activities. She served on Rossford's Library Board, and helped Dick start a business. She was a loving person to all.
Sylvia was a member of Grace Methodist Church, and attended Cross Point Church in Niceville FL during the winters. She let her faith guide her through life, as she studied the Bible each day, taught Sunday School to children, and led numerous Bible Classes for adults. She also volunteered at St. Vincent's and St. Anne's Hospitals for 23 years making baby blankets, hats and booties.
Sylvia is survived by her loving Husband, Dick, Sons, Richard (Kathleen) J. Goeke, Douglas A. Goeke, and Bradley (Laura) J. Goeke; Grandchildren, Leah (Michael) Palmer, Ian (Kelsey Peterson) Goeke, Meryl (Fiancée, Philip Guthrie) Goeke, Bennett Goeke, Luisa Goeke, Jonah Goeke, and Caleb Goeke. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Bertha Vargo, and sister, Margaret Zeller.
There will be a celebration of life at Grace Methodist Church, 601 East Boundary Street, Perrysburg, OH on Saturday, November 16 at 11am. The family requests that no one wear black, but instead wear something cheerful, to honor one of God's daughters. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Grace Methodist Church.
The family would like to thank the Rossford Police, Fire, and Rescue squads for their services.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Newcomer Funeral Home, Southwest Chapel.
