Susan Antoinette Burkett, age 87, of Waterville, Ohio, formerly of Maumee, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2025, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo, surrounded by her family. She was born June 13, 1938, to Vincent Louis and Sophie Frances (Krall) Swartz. Sue grew up on a farm in Adams Township. She attended St. Charles Elementary School and graduated from Maumee High School in 1956.
Sue married the love of her life, William Earl Burkett on November 7, 1959, at St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Church. They remained active parishioners for many years, with Sue serving as a lunch mother and CYO champion girls track coach. They lived in Maumee, Ohio for 38 years before moving to Waterville.
Sue and Bill were members of the Toledo Sailing Club and enjoyed boating on the Maumee River and Lake Erie. They were both members of golf leagues and had a timeshare in Hilton Head. They also traveled to Scottsdale, Arizona with family to get in extra rounds of golf in good weather.
Yearly camping trips across the U.S. that started out with a pop-up camper and three boys crowded into the back seat of a car, evolved into a spacious RV that was used for many vacations and tailgate parties.
Always together, Bill and Sue attended thousands of grade school, high school and college baseball, softball and football games. Their favorite teams were whichever ones their sons, grandchildren or great grandchildren played on. The couple became an integral part of each team family and the total game experience.
For many years, Sue played pinochle with her Ladies Card Club and was an active member of Towne Club, raising funds for local charities. Sue was a regular sponsor for the Lucas County Fair Livestock Auction and a Toledo Zoo & Aquarium Zoo Pal sponsor.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Vince and Sophie (Krall) Swartz; son, James E. Burkett and sister, Marilyn Hertzfeld. Sue is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, William “Bill” Burkett; sons, Bill (Peggi) Burkett and Scott (Cathy) Burkett; daughter-in-law, Susan Burkett; grandchildren, Ashley (Maddy) Burkett, Lauren (Logan) Oxender, Benjamin (Jessica) Burkett, Taylor (Taylor Ann) Burkett, Jason (Monet) Burkett, Peter (Karli) Burkett, Matthew (Hallie) Burkett, Carrie (fiancé, Luke Rouse) Burkett and Maggie (Damien) Miller; great-grandchildren, Carter, Colt, Sophie, Sienna, Beckham, James Douglas "JD" and Annabelle; foster great-grandchildren, Atticus and Achilles; sisters, Norma Jean Hoecherl and Elaine Kuehnl; sister-in-law, Johann (Wilbur) Wagner; brothers-in-law, Dick Burkett and Robert Burkett and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
