Listen to Obituary

Shirley Jean Weiss Fuhlbrigge, born February 28, 1933, received her wings on February 22, 2026, and is now reunited with her husband and beloved MaMa.

She graduated from Devilbiss High School in 1951 and went on to attend St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1954. She briefly lived in Fort Walton Beach before returning to Toledo in 1955 to be near family. In Toledo, she worked as a delivery nurse at St. Vincent’s Hospital.

In 1969, she married Dr. Armin Fuhlbrigge. They worked side by side in his family practice for the next 35 years. She loved their patients, and many became lifelong personal friends. Entertaining was her passion, and several evenings each week she hosted friends for Bridge. For many years, she enjoyed playing golf, bowling, and all kinds of card games. She especially loved traveling the world with Armin and cherished their incredible sailing adventures throughout the Caribbean.

Upon retiring, they moved to their cottage in Grayling, Michigan, before eventually settling in the warm weather of Leesburg, Florida. In 2019, they returned to Toledo to be closer to family. Shirley embraced this chapter of life, first at Alexis Gardens, where she spent many evenings playing poker, and later at The Crescent, where she cherished lively dinner conversations and weekly symphony concerts.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Armin Fuhlbrigge; her parents, Lloyd Lee and Nadene E. Lee; and her stepson, Peter Fuhlbrigge.

She is survived by her children: Mark (Beth) Fosgate, Gloria (Jim) Sheppard, and Steven (Jennifer) Fosgate; her stepchildren: Dr. Robert (Anne) Fuhlbrigge, Elizabeth “Lisa” (Joe) Zofchak, and Thomas (Kelly) Fuhlbrigge. Her grandchildren that brought her enormous pride: Nikki Fosgate (Jason) Sims, Joshua Fosgate, Danielle Suffron (Andy) Spahr, Alex (Kelsey) Suffron, and Ally Fosgate; bonus grandchildren Rebecca (Paul) Whited and Andy (Ann) Sell; and her great-grandchildren, who brought her immeasurable joy.

Shirley also cherished a friendship of more than 50 years with Ralph Revill, who, though far away, faithfully called each day to check in on her.

A special thank you to everyone at The Crescent and to her caregivers—Anjelica, Janisha, and Ciara—and at The Grove, Jean, Erlinda, and Nurse Kristen—for their compassionate care and support.

Shirley will always be remembered for her happy disposition, kindness, generosity, and deep care for others. Her immediate family will celebrate her life on her birthday.
