It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley E. Balazs, who left this world on February 8, 2026, at the age of 87, in her beloved Toledo, Ohio. Born on November 21, 1938, Shirley was a vibrant spirit, full of life and love, who dedicated herself to her family and friends. As the matriarch, she held her family together with a strength that was both nurturing and fierce, ensuring that her home was always a place of warmth, laughter, and some of the best meals, which she joyfully prepared for her loved ones.
Shirley's personality was nothing short of a spitfire; she was opinionated, witty, and ever-engaging. Her charm drew people in, making every gathering a cherished event. The love she had for her family radiated in her every action, from hosting elaborate holiday celebrations to simply sharing countless stories filled with laughter. She adored being surrounded by her children—Bob Lindner and his wife Sandy, Cathy Mason, Greg Lindner and his wife Jennifer, Lee Ann Ward and her husband Ken, and Stacey Hessey—and she treasured the joy brought to her life by her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Beyond her role as a beloved family member, Shirley had passions that brought her great joy. She was an enthusiastic fan of the Toledo Goaldiggers and attended many games over the years, cheering loudly for her team. Additionally, her love for Elvis Presley was evident; not only did she have the opportunity to see him perform live, but she also cherished attending musical tributes in his honor, allowing her to relive those moments again and again.
Having been the last survivor among five siblings, Shirley deeply understood the value of family and connection. She worked hard for those she loved and was proud of every accomplishment that stemmed from her devotion to them. Her spirit will forever be remembered in the hearts of her loved ones, each carrying a piece of her as they continue their own journeys.
In honoring Shirley’s life, her visitation will take place on February 20, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 4:00 PM, both hosted at Newcomer Funeral Home, Northwest Toledo, located at 4150 W Laskey Rd, Toledo, OH 43623. After the service, a further visitation will allow friends and family to come together in remembrance from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. These moments will serve as a testament to the bright, indelible mark Shirley E. Balazs has left on all who knew her.
Shirley’s spirit lives on in the many lives she touched, and she will be profoundly missed by all who loved her, including her late husband Steven Balazs, who passed away in 2011, along with her sons Larry Lindner and Doug Laney. Each cherished memory of her will remain a lasting legacy of love and laughter.
