Russell H. Mahaney Jr.

Russell H. Mahaney Jr., fondly known as Russ, passed away on July 27, 2026, in his hometown of Toledo, Ohio, at the age of 79. Born on September 28, 1946, in Toledo, Russ grew up in a close-knit community, graduating from Ottawa Hills High School as part of the class of 1964.

Known for his warmth, humor, and unwavering devotion to those around him, Russ lived a life defined by integrity, hard work, and kindness. From a young age, he embodied the values that would guide him throughout his life—dedication, loyalty, and an easygoing spirit that put everyone at ease. If the garage door was open, it meant friends and family were always welcome to stop by and visit, sharing in stories and laughter. Russ had a story for everything, captivating listeners with his charm and wit.

Russ began his professional career with Ohio Bell, which later became AT&T, before he was drafted into the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. Serving his country with pride, he was stationed at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, a chapter in his life that shaped him in profound ways. It was there that Russ’s life took a beautiful turn when he met his future wife, who was attending Minot State University. After his honorable service, Russ returned to the telecommunications industry, dedicating more than 40 years to his work—a field he loved deeply and took immense pride in throughout his career.

A quintessential blue-collar and hardworking man, Russ balanced his professional life with his passions and hobbies. He was an avid football fan, always cheering for the Ohio State Buckeyes, and found joy in spending time at the local gun range. His love for his family and friends was matched only by his generous heart; Russ was never too busy to help a neighbor or offer a listening ear. He was the anchor in moments of need, the first to offer support, and the last to expect recognition for his steadfast presence.

Russ’s greatest pride came from his family, particularly his grandchildren, whom he adored. Their achievements and happiness brought him endless joy and fulfillment.

 He leaves behind his cherished daughter, Kimberly Kennedy, and his son, Patrick Mahaney and wife Jessica. Russ’s legacy further lives on through his beloved grandchildren: Olivia Kennedy, Joseph Kennedy, Morgan Mahaney, and Connor Mahaney. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Mahaney and wife Galong, a host of nieces, nephews, and other loving family members.

In addition to those who survived him, Russ was preceded in death by his devoted wife Joyce who passed away in June 2006. He was also proceeded in death by his parents, his dear sister Elizabeth Lewis, and several friends throughout the years.

Russ will be remembered for his everlasting love, his humor, and his unshakeable support for those around him. The blue-collar work ethic he embodied, the laughter he shared, and the time spent gathered with family and friends—sometimes signaled simply by an open garage door—are memories that will be cherished forever.

Visitation for Russell H. Mahaney Jr. will be held on August 5, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, West Sylvania, 3655 King Rd, Toledo, OH 43617. Funeral services will follow on August 6, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the same location. A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at Toledo Memorial Park, 6382 Monroe Street, Sylvania, OH 43560, at 12:30 p.m. on August 6.

Russ’s legacy of love, humor, and dedication to family, friends, and community will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
