Roosevelt Payton Jr. was born on April 26, 1935, in Edwards, Mississippi, and passed away peacefully in Toledo, Ohio, on December 15, 2025. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and an esteemed member of his community.
Respected for his dedication and work ethic, Roosevelt worked at a local golf course, where he fostered many friendships and made lasting memories. He had a profound passion for life that extended far beyond his professional endeavors. His artistic talents shone through in his intricate drawings, and he found joy in playing the saxophone, with a special fondness for jazz music that mirrored his vibrant spirit. Roosevelt also cherished the tranquility of nature, spending many serene moments fishing and caring for his yard, where he took pride in nurturing the beauty around him.
As the third of four siblings, Roosevelt shared his life journey with his sisters: Olivia Elmore, Lillie Mae "Medezee" Hardamon, and Vivian Ricket. His familial bonds were significant and deeply cherished, reflective of the love that characterized his relationships throughout his life. He was also lovingly devoted to his immediate family, including his son, DePorres Payton; his daughter, Ester Payton; and his granddaughter, Valencia Payton. They carry forward his legacy of warmth, creativity, and love.
Roosevelt is preceded in death by his parents, Roosevelt Payton Sr. and Eva (Elmore) Payton, who surely instilled in him the values he would carry throughout his life.
Visitation services will be held on December 26, 2025, at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southwest Toledo, located at 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd, Toledo, OH 43614. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
