Robert L. Swain, a cherished member of the Toledo community, passed away on July 24, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on May 31, 1932, Robert lived a life filled with devotion to his family, faith, and career.
A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, Robert served honorably during the Korean War and was recognized for his bravery as a Purple Heart recipient. After his military service, he dedicated over 43 years to his profession as a Railroad Carman, working for respected companies such as Norfolk & Western Railroad, Detroit Toledo Shoreline, and Grand Trunk Western. His commitment to his work and the people he served was evident in every aspect of his life.
Robert was a graduate of Macksburg High School in Ohio, where he laid the foundation for a life characterized by kindness, generosity, and a great sense of humor. As a loyal supporter of Ohio State University, he passionately attended numerous games, reveling in the spirited atmosphere and camaraderie that defined each match.
He was a devoted Christian, grounded in his faith, which was a significant part of his life and identity. Known for his welcoming nature, Robert had a unique ability to bring joy to those around him. His loving spirit was evident in his relationships with family, friends, and the community.
Robert is survived by his son, Mark Swain; his daughters, Tina Swain and Crystal Swain; and his beloved grandchildren, Corri (Ron) Teal, Jami (Rollie) Barnes, and Jayleigh (Nathan ) Lammie. He also leaves behind his brother, Frank (Marsha) Swain; his brother-in-law, Glenn Mullen (Ron); his sister-in-law, Cindy (Joe) Spidle; and many nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly. As well as his fur-baby, Riley.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie C. Swain, whose love and partnership were central to his life. Also welcoming him in eternal rest are his siblings, Pauline Board, Warren Swain, Betty Dixon, and Earl Swain.
In honor of Buckeye Bob, the family requests guests wear their OSU attire or colors if possible.
A visitation will be held on July 31, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, West Sylvania, located at 3655 King Rd, Toledo, OH 43617. A graveside service will take place the following day, August 1, 2025, at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park, with the service commencing at 12:30 PM.
