Richard Charles Tayburn, affectionately known as "Red," passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on October 29, 2025, in Toledo, Ohio. Born in Somerville, New Jersey, on April 12, 1937, Richard was a devoted family man and a remarkable individual whose kindness and love touched the lives of all who knew him.
Throughout his life, Richard earned a reputation as a jack of all trades. He worked tirelessly in various fields, including manufacturing, construction, and heavy equipment repair. For many years, he found joy and fulfillment in his role as a bus mechanic until he hung up his tools for retirement. His hands were skilled, and his heart was kind; he approached every task with dedication and a strong work ethic, always with the intent of helping others.
A gentle giant in every sense, Richard was a beloved figure in his neighborhood, a father figure to many who were fortunate enough to experience his generous spirit. He was known as the "Skunk Whisperer," a testament to his unique ability to connect with animals and nurture them with affection. Those fortunate enough to witness his gentle demeanor knew there was no one quite like him, quiet yet engaging, he always had a listening ear, making anyone feel at ease in his presence. His loving nature and warmth drew people close; anyone could find solace and companionship in his company.
Richard treasured his family above all. He shared a remarkable marriage of 66 years with his devoted wife, Joann, who was by his side through all of life's adventures. Together, they explored the beauty of life, from traveling along the coast of Maine to marvel at lighthouses to enjoying peaceful moments watching whales with their daughter Kim. He will be fondly remembered for his patience, especially when teaching his daughter Mary to drive. His love for Joann was profound, and it shone brightly in every interaction they shared.
Richard took immense pride in his family, which included his two daughters, Mary (Brad) Westcott and Kim (Steven) Matzinger. His legacy continues with his grandson Eric (Tegan) Boston and great-grandchildren Caidence and Ethan Boston. He was their hero, their confidant, and the embodiment of what it meant to be a loving husband, father, and grandparent. Even his fur babies, Jellybean, Boo, and Ellinore, were cherished members of his family, reminding all of the love he had to share.
Sadly, he was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Violet Tayburn, and his eleven siblings, who surely welcomed him with open arms. Each memory of him will be woven into the fabric of his family's lives, serving as a testament to a man who filled their days with love, laughter, and valuable lessons.
Richard Charles Tayburn leaves behind a legacy of hard work, compassion, and unwavering dedication to his family and friends. His spirit will continue to shine in the hearts of those he touched, a lasting reminder of the impact one person can have on the lives of many.
His family will honor his life and memory during a private celebration.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor his memory do so by extending an act of kindness to others.
