Richard Melvin McGee, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026, in Monroe, Michigan. Born on October 1, 1929, in Elmore, Ohio, Richard's life was one filled with love, dedication, and a deep connection to the simple pleasures of life.
Richard married the love of his life, Betty Jo Rice, on July 29, 1948, in Kentucky. Together, they shared an extraordinary 65 years of marriage until Betty Jo’s passing. Their bond was a testament to enduring love and steadfast partnership. They built a beautiful life together, marked by family, faith, and the joy of shared experiences.
A man of many passions, Richard was especially known for his love of boating and fishing. His heart belonged to the waters of Lake Erie, where he owned numerous boats throughout his life. The lake was a sanctuary for him, a place where he found peace, adventure, and countless cherished memories. Those quiet mornings and exhilarating afternoons spent on the water reflected Richard’s patient spirit and zest for life.
One of Richard’s proudest accomplishments was building a log cabin home in 1980 in Ottawa Lake. This cabin was not just a structure but a symbol of his hard work, skill, and desire to create a lasting family haven. It became the place where he lived out his later years, surrounded by the tranquility of nature. In the winter months, Richard and his loved ones would retreat to Ellenton, Florida, embracing a softer season in warmer climates but carrying with them the warmth of family bonds.
Richard’s legacy lives on through his sons Tom, Jeff (and his wife Dawne), Kelly, and Timothy, who carry forward his memory and values. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren, along with many great and great-great grandchildren, whose lives he touched deeply. Their love and memories will forever keep Richard’s spirit alive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his devoted wife Betty Jo, and his son Mike. Though deeply missed, their memories remain a cherished part of Richard’s story.
Richard Melvin McGee’s life was a beautiful journey—marked by love, hard work, and a passion for the outdoors. His story reminds us of the importance of family and the joy found in nature’s embrace. His presence will be profoundly missed, but the warmth he brought to those around him will endure eternally.
