R. Gwen Hicks, a spirited individual whose journey was marked by independence and passion, passed away on January 9, 2026, in Toledo, Ohio. Born on December 7, 1964, in Wayne County, Michigan, Gwen was a strong-willed woman who fiercely embraced life. She cultivated a career as a truck driver at a time when women were not commonly seen behind the wheel, a pursuit she approached with pride and enthusiasm. Traveling the open road allowed her to see America through unique perspectives while meeting a diverse array of people along the way.
Gwen's legacy will forever be cherished by her loving son, Paul Stallard Jr., and his partner, Chrissy Schick. Paul's treasured memories include, such adventures they took together to Chicago via Amtrak, the playful races around Children's Hospital in their pedal car and wheelchair, and the awe-inspiring moments spent watching the Detroit fireworks from the top of the Checkered Cab Building. It brought her immense joy to witness her family grow, reveling in the delight of becoming a grandmother to Melody, and Sebastian.
In addition to her role as a proud mother and grandmother, Gwen found comfort in her passions. She was an avid reader, often lost in the pages of a new book. Her electrifying personality was marked by an outspoken and carefree attitude. Gwen was deeply committed to her beliefs and lived her life under the principle that she never wanted to be a burden on anyone.
Educated at Redford Union High School, Gwen's tenacity and determination made her a formidable presence among her peers.
She is remembered by her brothers; Ronnie Hicks and his wife Leslie, Roger Hicks, Randy Stowe and his wife Kathy, Rick Stowe and his wife Angie, and Rodney Redwood. Gwen also leaves behind her extended family, which included a host of nieces, nephews.
Though Gwen's passing leaves a profound void, she is reunited in spirit with her beloved parents, Mary R. Lang and Jesse H. Hicks, and her siblings, Robert Redwood and sister-in-law Rosie Redwood. Their embrace brings comfort as they gather once again.
Gwen Hicks will be remembered as a trailblazer, an adventurous soul whose spirit will live on through the memories she created and the lives she touched. Her journey may have ended, but her legacy and the love she shared will forever remain indelibly etched in the hearts of those she held dear.
