Norman Plumer, aka Bob Kelly to his many fans, passed away on his birthday, May 15, 2025, at the age of 84 in Holland, Ohio. Born on May 15, 1941, in Akron, Ohio, Norm/Bob made his way to Northwest Ohio in 1965, becoming a fixture of Toledo area radio and television for over 50 years. His radio career included stops at WTOD, WWJ (Detroit), WCWA, WOHO, WXKR, and most recently 93.5 WRQN (Kelly & Staples and Bob & Becky). Bob was known to say he's "worked at every station in Toledo besides Sunoco". For 5 decades, NW Ohio listeners relied on Bob as a part of their morning routine. Combining his quick wit, conversational skills, and revered story telling ability, he captivated audiences with his feel good commentary that always left a smile on their face. With the help of his popular on-air satirical version of Mary Worth, and the famous Perry Chair television commercials, Bob formally etched himself into media history, being inducted into the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2006.
Norm grew up in Copley, Ohio and as a kid quickly realized two things: First, he loved sports, and second, people gravitate towards others who are funny. This would drive his life of entertainment both personally and professionally. Norm graduated from Copley High School in 1959, where he played basketball, baseball, and golf. He attended and graduated from Kent State University, where he was a member of the University's first Golf Team. He also got his start in entertainment, running the camera for sporting events, and doing on air broadcasting for a variety of university stations and local events.
Perhaps however, the lead in Norm's story has been buried, as his most endearing qualities were certainly as a husband, father, brother, and friend. Norm was always a family-first man who showed an unmatched level of support for the people he loved and cared about. "Pop" as he's known by his grandchildren, was wired to enjoy the success and happiness of others even more than his own. Norm would quite literally never miss a sporting event in which someone in his family was participating, no matter the location. His dedication, support, and love has provided an example and foundation for his family to build on for generations to come.
Norm didn't drink much, but he was a sports-a-holic. Talented in just about everything he tried, his sport of choice was golf, where he played frequently with family and friends. Through his radio stations, Norm created traveling softball and basketball teams to play at different community locations. Norm would never miss watching a Cleveland Browns game with his family. He was also an avid Detroit Tigers fan, watching every game until the end. Norm loved watching golf, as well as a spattering of other sports depending on the season. Norm enjoyed horse racing, rooting for 33 in roulette , and playing the occasional cold hand of Baseball or Follow the Queen. He was a man that followed the sentiment of the more the merrier, and not only welcomed, but encouraged others to share in his passions and interests.
Norm is survived by his wife of 44 years, Linda Plumer; his daughter, Kristie Pollock (Jason); his son, Bobby Plumer (Lauren); as well as his cherished grandchildren, Jackson, Ella, Lucas, and Estelle. He also leaves behind his supportive sister, Laura Howard (Phil); his nephews, Joe Howard, Brian Howard (Julianne), Lisa Masiello (Matt); and his sister-in-law, Karen Chandler. Norm will be deeply missed by his family, including his dog Cooper.
A visitation in honor of Norm will take place on May 31, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, followed by a memorial service at 6:00 PM, all held at Newcomer Funeral Home, located at 3655 King Rd, Toledo, OH, 43617.
