Michael J. Antel, a dedicated public servant and respected member of the Toledo community, passed away on May 9, 2026, in Oregon, Ohio. Born on February 24, 1949, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Michael lived a life characterized by steadfast commitment, integrity, and service to others.
Michael proudly served his country in the United States Navy for six years, stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas, where he was a skilled Propeller Mechanic. Following his military service, he devoted 25 years to the Toledo Police Department, demonstrating unwavering dedication and professionalism throughout his career. In addition to his duties as an officer, Michael shared his knowledge and experience as an instructor at the Police Academy, shaping and inspiring future generations of law enforcement personnel.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Michael was known for his distinctive personality—funny, independent, hardworking, honest, and remarkably straightforward. His friends and colleagues admired his direct approach and genuine character. Outside of his vocation, Michael’s passions were varied and heartfelt. He treasured his time at his horse farm, where he cared for up to 15 horses, and he had a special fondness for cutting grass, a simple joy that brought him peace. Vacations to tropical destinations, particularly Hawaii, held a special place in his heart and provided relaxation away from his active life.
Michael’s dedication extended to the community through his involvement in several organizations, including Keep Lucas County Beautiful, reflecting his commitment to environmental stewardship and community enhancement.
He was married to his beloved late wife, Deborah Carper, for over 40 years, a testament to a long-standing and deeply cherished partnership.
Michael is survived by his son, Michael, and sister-in-laws Barbara, Linda, and Donna (David), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews—all of whom carry forward his legacy of honesty and hard work. He was preceded in death by his wife Deborah, his parents Michael Casper Antel and Edith Wiseman Antel, and his brothers Patrick Antel and William Kutlowey.
Michael J. Antel leaves behind a profound impact on colleagues, friends, and family. His life’s work and personal virtues stand as a lasting tribute to a man who served with honor, lived with purpose, and loved deeply. He will be remembered with great respect and affection by all who knew him.
