Max J. Eckel, Sr.

It is with deep sadness that we mourn the loss of Max J. Eckel, Sr., who passed away unexpectedly on August 6, 2026.

Born on November 21, 1954, in Toledo, Ohio, Max was the eighth of nine children born to John and Florence Eckel. Growing up in large family taught Max two things very early on: how to hold his own, and how to command a room. He graduated from Rossford High School and went on to earn his dual degrees in Operations Research and Statistics from Bowling Green State University.

A dedicated and hardworking man, Max held only two “jobs” throughout his career: at The Lion Store and in the tuxedo business. Working at The Lion Store proved to be the best career move he ever made, as it’s where he met his loving wife, Luann. Together, they built a fun-filled, love-packed life and shared 46 wonderful years of marriage.

Max was, simply put, a larger-than-life presence. Naturally gifted at making people laugh, he lit up every room he walked into and was never one to shy away from being the center of attention. Whether telling a joke, hosting a gathering, or pulling people together, Max lived by his signature motto: "The more the merrier!"

His greatest joy was his family. Max was a devoted husband, a proud father to his children, and the absolute favorite fan of his grandkids. He spent his happiest days surrounded by loved ones at Round Lake, cheering loudly at his grandkids’ games and activities, heading out on family vacations, and hitting the golf course every week with his Waterside friends. A die-hard Detroit sports fan, Max stuck by his teams through thick and thin (mostly thin), always ready for the next big game.

Max was preceded in death by his parents, John and Florence Eckel, and his brothers, Terry Eckel and Chris Eckel.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Luann; his children and their spouses; his beloved grandchildren; his 6 siblings and their spouses; and an endless list of friends who will forever miss his quick wit, warmhearted laughter, and unmatched energy.

Max's family will receive guests on Thursday, August 20, 2026 from 4:00 pm until the start of a Memorial Service at 6:00 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home - West Sylvania Chapel, 3655 King Rd, Toledo.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Max's memory to the American Heart Association.
