Marquis Smay, affectionately known as "Mack," left this world on June 11, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on November 24, 1931, in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania, Mack carved a life filled with dedication, love, and a sense of humor that endeared him to all who knew him. He was a proud graduate of Vandergrift High School in 1949 and later completed his education at the University of Toledo in 1961. His journey of service began in the U.S. Navy, where he served his country with honor.

For 30 years, Mack thrived as a Property Administrator for the Government's Department of Defense, a role that mirrored his work ethic and commitment to excellence. But perhaps his greatest pride came from his family. As a devoted husband to his beloved wife Joyce for an extraordinary 67 years, Mack cherished their life together, raising a wonderful family who was his pride and joy. He is survived by his daughter Carrie Zunk, sons Douglas (Deadra) Smay and Donald (Liesl) Smay, and daughter Donna (Dr. Charles Cieslik) Smay; his sister Val Jean Walker; sister-in-laws Woneida Smay, Judy (Rich) Kwiatkowski. His legacy continues through his grandchildren – Sara Barnes, Emily Smay, Christopher Roemer, Kyle Smay, Megan Anderson, Erica Bare, Christopher Luettke, and Patrick Luettke – and great-grandchildren Jackson Barnes, Aiden Barnes, and Kaylee Bare.

He was preceded in death by his father, Austin Smay; his mother, Minnie Smay (née Berkey); and his brothers, Clare 'Swifty' Smay and Wayne Smay; and longtime friend since first grade, Richard Ednie.

Mack was a man of many passions and interests. He was an avid football fan, proudly cheering for the Pittsburgh Steelers. His travels with Joyce were adventures filled with cherished memories, and he found joy in simple pleasures, like enjoying family time at Nettle Lake for many years and his favorite treat, vanilla ice cream with chocolate fudge. When not traveling, you could find him in his garage, immersed in projects or cultivating his garden, all while wearing an easy-going smile and often cracking a joke.

Known for his accommodating nature, Mack had a unique ability to stop and help those he loved, fostering friendships with everyone he met. He had an unforgettable presence, always busy doing things, but when he took a moment to rest, it was often in his favorite lazy-boy chair, where he enjoyed indulging in life's quieter moments.

Mack's family would like to offer their deep gratitude and thanks for the work of the VA and the Hospice of Northwest Ohio for all they have done for Mack and them during the last year.

As we gather to celebrate his remarkable life, visitation will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home, Northwest Toledo, on June 19, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service beginning at 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at the same location.
