Margaret "Maggie" Downey, known affectionately by her loved ones as "Boots," passed away on May 1, 2025, in Toledo, Ohio, at the age of 85. Born on March 8, 1940, in Ottawa Lake, Michigan, Maggie was a vibrant force of nature who filled the lives of those around her with laughter, love, and a touch of feisty spirit.
Maggie spent an impressive 36 years with Foodtown, followed by 17 years at Moongate Luxury Adult Living, where her vivacious personality and caring nature shone through. She never met a stranger, establishing friendships all along the way and proudly nurturing the many relationships she built. Her life was a testament to her commitment to caring for others, notably giving her time and attention to her dear neighbor, Rose Garver, sharing many memorable outings to lunch, dinner, and even the casino together.
An accomplished gardener, Maggie possessed a green thumb that allowed her to cultivate a variety of beautiful flowers, reflecting her own vibrant spirit. Her love for the outdoors extended beyond gardening; she cherished family vacations to Marble Lake during birthdays, boating on the beloved vessel named the "Maggie D," and fishing. Maggie was also drawn to gambling, enjoying trips to casinos in Ohio, Michigan, and Las Vegas, along with countless evenings spent playing cards and bowling.
Her pride and joy were always her family. She raised her children with determination and love, and her greatest achievement in life was forming a nurturing home for them. She is survived by her loving spouse, Robert "Bob" Downey, and her cherished sons, John (Brenda) Nieman, Kevin (Mimi) Nieman, Randy Nieman, Steve Downey, and Bruce (Stephanie) Downey. An equally devoted daughter, Robin Parker (partner Jim Bailey), carries on her legacy, alongside her sister, Joyce Whitston. Maggie also leaves behind a large and loving family that includes 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.
Maggie is preceded in death by her father, Howard Roenick, her mother, Margaret (nee Beir) Roenick, and her siblings—sisters Joan Pool and Jean Steele, and brother George Roenick. Their memories, alongside the countless stories of love and laughter shared with Maggie, will continue to resonate with all who knew her.
No visitation or services will be held to honor Maggies’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Maggie's life can be made to Planned Pethood or any charity of your choice.
As we remember Maggie, we celebrate the feisty, outgoing, and endlessly caring woman who brought joy into the lives of many. Her warm heart and unyielding spirit will be sorely missed but will forever live on in the memories of her beloved family and friends.
