Vera Madeline Cornett, 92, died on, September 30,2026, following a five-year battle with dementia. She was currently residing at the Glass Peaks Senior community in the memory care unit. Madeline was born on November 15, 1933, in Bethel, North Carolina in a depression era house with no electric or indoor plumbing. She was the second of six children born to Toy & Lena Dishman. She attended Bethel High School where she would meet her future husband of 70 years.
After a three-year courtship Madeline married, Boyd Allen Cornett, on March 26, 1952, in Mountain City, Tennessee. In the summer of that year, they moved to Toledo seeking a better life and job opportunities. In 1954 she gave birth to her first of three sons with the arrival of, Royce Allen. By 1959 they purchased a house on Travis Drive in West Toledo - she would reside on that street in three different houses for the next 68 years. In 1962 she gave birth to her second son, Randy Lee, and then Ricky Dale followed sixteen months later on Christmas day in 1963.
For over 50 years Madeline worked in the restaurant industry and was an excellent waitress., Starting out in small diners in Boone, North Carolina. In Toledo she worked at the Budapest, Mel's Diner, a long stint with Howard Johnsons, The Palace, Joe's International Hot Dog, Olga's Kitchen, Ranch House, Brauer's Deli, Olympia's and finally Generations Family restaurant until she was 81, she only stopped working because the restaurant closed. Her warm and outgoing personality made her a standout with everyone she served with her southern accent and big hair.
Aside from her strong and long work ethics she devoted her entire life to her family and home life. She enjoyed cooking, keeping a spotless house, hosting family gatherings, sending out thousands of greeting cards, holiday decorations, working outside with her flowers, collecting dolls, traditional country music, and always looking her best. For over 50 years she supported and attended countless racing events at Toledo Speedway and Flatrock Speedway cheering on sons Royce, Randy, and grandson R.J., until she could no longer physically go.
In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by her brother Lynne Dishman, sisters Genevieve Cornett and Kay Steniard. Left to honor and cherish her memory are sons Royce & wife Tiffany, Randy and Rick. Grandchildren R.J. and Brooklyn who affectionately called her "MEMAW" and brothers Paul Dishman and Johnny Dishman along with many nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of Madeline during visitation on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, West Sylvania, located at 3655 King Road, Toledo, Ohio 43617. Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the same location. Following the service, Madeline will be laid to rest at Bedford Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 10550 Lewis Avenue, Temperance, Michigan 48182. The family welcomes all who knew and loved Madeline to join them in honoring and celebrating her life.
