Lawrence J. Helsel, known affectionately to all as Larry, passed away on June 26, 2025, in his beloved hometown of Toledo, Ohio. He was born on May 28 1933, and lived a life filled with love, laughter, and the gentle beauty of simple pleasures.
Larry’s career as a carpenter showcased his remarkable craftsmanship and dedication to his work. He was proud to have contributed to the world around him, always leaving a mark of quality and care in everything he built. A graduate of Whitmer High School, Class of 1951, Larry later served in the Army, dedicating two years of his life, from June 25, 1953, to May 25, 1955, to proudly protect the freedoms we cherish.
Larry was not just known for his skills as a carpenter; he was an individual who touched hearts with his personality. Described by family as a “Good Guy,” he brought warmth and humor to every gathering. His sharp wit and playful sarcasm were matched only by the profound love he held for those in his life.
His passions painted his world—the serene joy of fishing on the lake, the simple pleasure of puttering around the garage, and the commitment to his health through daily walks at the Franklin Park Mall. Larry had an eclectic collection of shot glasses and a fondness for battery-operated clocks that brought smiles to those who visited his home.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Sharon Helsel; his daughter, Becky (Mark) Kessler; son, Bryan Helsel; step-sons, Alfred Moore Jr. and John Moore; along with his ten loving grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy. He is also remembered fondly by five loving nieces and nephews, and many cherished friends who enriched his life.
Among his proudest accomplishments were his experiences on the Honor Flight on September 24, 2014, where he was honored as a veteran, receiving the respect and admiration he so rightly deserved. But perhaps his greatest achievement was the loving family he nurtured throughout his life—a testament to his caring spirit.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Vernetta Helsel (nee Schappert); father, John Helsel; sister, Luada “Babe” Sellers; sister, Mary Mondabach; and brother, William “Bill” Helsel. Each of these cherished relationships shaped the man he was and will be forever remembered.
Larry’s vibrant spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His service will be held at the Newcomer Funeral Home in Northwest Toledo on July 8, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, where friends and family can come together to celebrate his extraordinary life. A gathering will also be held starting at 7:00 PM that same evening to share memories and commemorate this remarkable man.
As we reflect on Larry’s journey, we find comfort in the memories of his laughter, the warmth of his embrace, and the love he instilled in everyone around him. He will be deeply missed, yet his legacy of kindness and generosity will forever resonate in the lives he touched.
