Larry Charles Roberts was born on August 27, 1950, in Toledo, Ohio, to the late Rosa and Lester Roberts Sr. He peacefully passed away at home, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 75 on June 23, 2026.
A devoted husband, loving father, caring brother, and cherished friend, Larry was a true pillar of the Toledo community.
Larry graduated from Jesup W. Scott High School in the late 1960s. He embarked on his professional journey at the Bonded Gas Station and the Roadway Factory. Later, he joined Sohio Gas Station, which transitioned into British Petroleum (BP). There, Larry built a long and distinguished career, steadily moving into management and earning the endearing nickname “Mr. BP.” He took great pride in his work, ultimately retiring after decades of dedicated service.
Beyond his career, Larry dedicated his life to giving back to his community. A passionate sports enthusiast and impactful mentor, he coached little league football in the Moody Manors neighborhood during his younger years, guiding local youth toward a better path and helping to keep them safe from the streets. Additionally, he coached and played in city softball leagues and was an avid bowler, celebrating the remarkable achievement of rolling three perfect 300 games. Through formal coaching and everyday acts of kindness, Larry touched countless lives with his generous spirit.
On January 10, 1979, Larry married his longtime love, Verleena Harris, enjoying 47 beautiful years of marriage and a total of 54 years together. Together, they raised three children: James “Ray,” Regina, and Greg.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Verleena Roberts; his daughter, Regina Wyley; and his sons, James (Jeania) Wyley and Gregory Buchanan. He is also remembered fondly by his nine grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Poppy”: Taveena (David) Wyley, Dylan Wyley, Ragni Foster, Davon (Brittney) Wyley, Sequioa Williams, Raeon Williams, Trevianna Brown, David Long, Natassja Si-An Gresham and Gregory Lamont Buchanan Jr. Twenty-six Great Grand Kids.
He will be lovingly remembered by his sisters, Mary Ann Sumrow, Jackie Terry, Deborah Jones, and Bridgette Anderson, as well as sisters-in-law Brenda Roberts and Rosa Marie Roberts, and brothers Darryl Roberts, Ricky Roberts, Mark Roberts Sr., Michael Roberts, and Tony Roberts, along with a host of nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Lester Roberts Jr., Stanley Roberts, and Chris Roberts.
Larry's enduring legacy of hard work, community mentorship, and unconditional love will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends. His dedication, kindness, and love will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
