Ken Baum, lovingly known by many as Reddawg, Mr. Ohio, and Bubba, passed away on March 31, 2026, in his cherished hometown of Toledo, Ohio. Born on October 18, 1977, Ken’s life was a testament to dedication, passion, and an indomitable spirit that touched countless lives throughout his nearly five decades.
A proud graduate of Woodward High School, class of 1996, Ken’s journey of learning continued at Owens Community College, where he earned his Associate’s Degree, followed by a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Toledo. Within the walls of education and beyond, Ken found his calling not just as a lifelong learner but as a devoted mentor and champion of youth.
For 21 years, Ken served as a Paraprofessional for Toledo Public Schools, a role through which he impacted the lives of many children and families in the community. His influence, however, stretched far beyond the classroom. For more than three decades, he dedicated himself to coaching baseball and football, leaving a lasting legacy across the fields of Woodward, Rogers, Bowsher, Start High Schools, and most recently, Sylvania Southview High School. Known for being strong-willed and deeply committed, Ken was a coach who shaped both athletes and individuals, instilling values of perseverance, teamwork, and heart.
His love for sports extended beyond coaching into enthusiastic fandom. An avid supporter of the Detroit Lions, Red Wings, Tigers, Pistons, and the Ohio State Buckeyes, Ken’s passion was palpable. He loyally traveled across the country to follow the Detroit Lions and cherished the special moments he shared taking his grandsons—Logan and Charley Hartford—to games, creating memories that will forever brighten the hearts of those who knew him.
Ken’s personality was as vibrant as it was endearing. Quirky with a sharp sense of humor, he was often described as a walking, talking sports dictionary. Behind his occasionally stubborn exterior lay a big heart, unmistakable to anyone who ever felt his caring warmth. Many remember Ken for the best hugs—a simple yet profound expression of the love he carried within.
He was a family man who loved deeply and lived fully for those closest to him. Ken adored his wife Diana Baum, to whom he was married for 17 years, and cherished his step-daughter Amber Cunningham. His family circle was rich and full, including his sister Julie Baum; nephews Julian Vance, Jaramiah Bradford, Jace Ribby; nieces Olivia Vance, Journee Cornett, Shaina Ribby; along with several aunts, uncles, and many loving extended family members who mourn his loss alongside a host of friends who loved him dearly.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Juanita Baum; grandmothers Helen Coulter and Shirley Baum; grandfathers Donald Sharp and Omar Baum; and his special cousin, Dave Sharp, all of whom now welcome him home with love.
Visitation to honor Ken’s remarkable life will be held on April 10, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home in Northwest Toledo, located at 4150 W Laskey Rd, Toledo, OH 43623. The funeral service will follow the visitation, beginning at 4:00 PM and concluding at 5:00 PM at the same location.
Ken Baum’s legacy as a coach, teacher, family man, and friend is woven deeply into the fabric of the Toledo community. His humor, dedication, and generous spirit have left an indelible mark that will be remembered and cherished forever. Though he may no longer be with us in person, the warmth of his best hugs, the laughter he sparked, and the lessons he imparted will continue to echo in the lives of all fortunate enough to know him. Rest in peace, Ken. You were truly one of a kind.
