Kathleen M. Heerdegen, 77, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away November 18 after a long, hard battle with cancer. Known for her quick wit, kind heart, and unwavering devotion to her loved ones, Kathleen leaves behind a legacy of laughter, warmth, and tradition.
Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, Kathleen spent much of her life working as a food broker — a career that perfectly suited her outgoing nature and love for connecting with people.
Kathleen’s passion for music was a lifelong gift. Whether singing in choir or harmonizing with friends, her voice carried warmth and grace. Those who knew her best will remember her sharp sense of humor, her ability to make everyone feel welcome, and her love for the simple things — a quiet evening, a good story, a nice Chianti and the company of those she cherished.
Kathleen’s greatest joy came from her family. She was a devoted mother to her son, Anthony Schmenk (Sara McQuistion), and a loving stepmother to Chris (Jen) Heerdegen, Doug (Julie) Heerdegen, and Jason (Alisa) Heerdegen. She adored her grandchildren — David and Danielle Schmenk, and Alison, Lauren, Brooke, Sydney, and Jase Heerdegen — each of whom brought her endless pride and joy. Her late husband, Richard Heerdegen, who passed away in 2018, was the love of her life, and together they built a home filled with faith, laughter, and love. She is also preceded in death by her brother, Joe Dacey.
Kathleen is also survived by her siblings, who shared a lifetime of memories: her sister Mary Lou Siebenaller (Rick), her brother Paul Dacey, and her sister Judy Loeffler (Jim).
She will be deeply missed, yet her spirit lives on through the traditions she upheld, the family she nurtured, and the joy she spread to everyone around her.
Viewing will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, from 9am–11am at Most Blessed Sacrament Parish, with Mass to follow. A luncheon will be held in the Kelly Room at 1:00 PM.
