Kaniya O. Durr, affectionately known as "NiyNiy," passed away on December 16, 2025, in Toledo, Ohio, just a few weeks shy of her 21st birthday. Born on December 29, 2004, in Columbus, Ohio, Kaniya's presence radiated warmth and joy, making her a cherished member of her family and a beloved friend to many.
Kaniya was a dedicated worker at Taco Bell for five wonderful years, where her friendly spirit and cheerful demeanor endeared her to co-workers and customers alike. She also enjoyed her summer job at Netty's alongside her sisters Mikayla and Alissia, creating lifelong memories together. Kaniya's commitment to her education was evident as she attended Toledo School for the Arts High School and pursued her studies in Criminal Justice at Lourdes University. There, she proudly made the competitive cheer team, a testament to her hard work and dedication.
With a personality that could light up a room, Kaniya was goofy and funny, often making those around her smile. Though she was initially shy and quiet until she got to know someone, Kaniya's caring and loving nature shone brightly once she opened up. She was known for being intelligent, focused, and a strong-minded debater, and these traits were admired by all who knew her.
Kaniya had a passion for life that was reflected in her numerous hobbies and interests. She loved building Legos, collecting shoes and perfume, and expressing herself through fashion and shopping. A true foodie, she reveled in indulging in her favorite crab legs and seafood boils and enjoyed movie nights out with her mother and sisters. Kaniya also treasured spending time with her cheer friends from Lourdes University and loved creating fun moments with her co-workers. She embraced social media and delighted in making TikToks, sharing her joyous spirit with a wider audience.
Kaniya is survived by her loving mother, Raushana Cunningham (Rod); her father, Otis Durr; her sisters, Mikayla Barfield and Alissia Durr; her aunt, Virginia Durr; her uncles, Bryan Durr and Taron (Lorraine) Cunningham; along with a host of extended family and close friends. She was predeceased by her grandmothers, Rochelle Berry and Evelyn Durr, who undoubtedly welcomed her with open arms.
A visitation and funeral service will be held in her memory on December 30, 2025, at Newcomer Funeral Home, West Sylvania in Toledo, Ohio. The visitation will start at 10:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM, concluding with a time for reflection until 1:00 PM.
Kaniya's spirit will forever live on in the hearts of all those she touched, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
