It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Jonathan "Jon" T. Freels, who left this world on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at the age of 63. Jon was born on November 29, 1961, in Toledo, Ohio, where he blossomed into a remarkable individual known for a strong work ethic and dedicated spirit, virtues instilled in him by his father. Jon began developing his work skills when he was young, working with his father, "Red" at M. Freels Survey Company, a business his father operated for many years. Jon then went on to serve for over 30 years as a Senior Construction Technician with the City of Toledo. His unwavering dedication to his job, the support and guidance he provided to his peers and associates will leave a lasting void in the hearts of those who knew him. His commitment to his union, AFSCME Local 7, and his profession was a testament to his character and will be dearly missed.
Jon was more than just a hardworking technician; he was a man with a joyful heart. His warm and reliable personality made him a cherished confidant and friend, always putting the needs of others before his own. Jon’s kindness and selflessness inspired many around him. He was admired for his wonderful sense of humor and quick wit that brought laughter and joy to any gathering.
Raised in a loving family, Jon treasured the time spent together, especially during the holidays at his parents' home. These gatherings were filled with good company, great food, and shared stories that were some of Jon’s fondest memories, reflecting the profound bond he cherished with those who were important to him.
An avid lover of motorcycles, Jon owned a Harley Davidson "Police Cruiser" and embraced the freedom of riding alongside his beloved wife, Dona with whom he shared 33 beautiful years of marriage. He often spoke of his dream to build a motorcycle of his own, though life’s busyness kept that dream at bay.
Music was another passion of Jon's, and he enjoyed playing the guitar in his younger years, cultivating a love for traditional Rock-n-Roll and the vibrant melodies of the '70s, including artists like Rush, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Jon Bonamassa, to name a few, filling his life with rhythm and soul.
Jon leaves behind a loving family: his devoted wife, Dona K. (Akiki) Freels; daughters, Courtney Freels, Katelyn Freels, Lisa (Anthony) Hyndman, and Samantha (Brooke) Harrison; son, Kyle (Ashley) Harrison; grandchildren, Ava, Ella, Case, Bradley, and Tanner; sisters, Marcia Lewis and Susan Beaver, many cherished nieces, nephews; dear friends, Nicolas Oswanski, Mary and Bob Abdow, Karen Daniel, and his beloved canine companion, Lilly.
Jon was preceded in death by his parents, Merideth and Joanne (Jacobi) Freels, who undoubtedly welcomed him with open arms.
As we mourn the loss of Jon, we find comfort in the love he shared and the memories he created. His kind spirit and joyful laughter will resonate in our hearts forever. He will be remembered for his unwavering support of family and friends and the joy he brought to those around him. Until we meet again, dear Jon, rest in peace.
