John B. Weisend Jr., affectionately known to many as "Pookie," passed away on July 27, 2025, in Toledo, Ohio, at the age of 66. Born on June 12, 1959, in Wheeling, West Virginia, John lived a life characterized by love, adventure, and a profound dedication to his family.
John's career began as a Blanchard Grinder for a steel company, where he was known for his work ethic and dedication. Unfortunately, an injury forced him to retire early, but John embraced a new role as a stay-at-home dad, a position he took on with great pride and devotion for many years. His commitment to his family and home was evident in everything he did.
Educated in the Lakeview class of 1978, John was not only passionate about his work but also about education and personal growth. His time in the military as a pavement maintenance specialist in the Air Force allowed him to explore various locations, including Alaska and Las Vegas, experiences that fed his adventurous spirit.
Above all, John was a loving husband to his devoted wife, Sharon Weisend, with whom he shared 42 years of marriage, beginning their journey together on August 27, 1983. He was the proud father of Tabetha and John Weisend, whose accomplishments brought him immense joy. John's pride extended to his grandchildren—Levi Smale, Daniel Smale, Amelia Sosnowicz, Darren Kiddle, and Bayley Weisend—who were a source of light in his life.
John was known for his warm personality; he was adventurous, caring, and always wore his heart on his sleeve. His laid-back nature, akin to that of a "hippy stoner," made him a beloved friend to many. He loved spending time outdoors, particularly walking in the woods and listening to music, often found enjoying life's simple pleasures with friends and family by his side.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon Weisend; children Tabetha Weisend and John Weisend; grandchildren Levi Smale, Daniel Smale, Amelia Sosnowicz, Darren Kiddle, and Bayley Weisend; and siblings Kevin (Julie) Weisend, Jeanne Laforte, Kristina (Mark) Tibeaudo, Jennifer Scott, and Michelle (Mike) Montgomery. John is also remembered by his aunt, Vicky (Art) Musicaro, along with a host of extended family and friends who cherished his presence.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Beth Weisend; grandparents, George and Ethel Stimac; uncle George Stimac Jr.; and brother-in-law Brian Laforte.
A memorial gathering to honor John’s life will be held on August 3, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, Northwest Toledo, located at 4150 W Laskey Rd, Toledo, OH 43623.
