Listen to Obituary

John W. Riley, a beloved husband, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2025, at the age of 84 in Toledo, Ohio. Born on August 11, 1941, in Greenville, Pennsylvania, John lived a life marked by loving relationships, dedicated service, and a passion for community and nature.

For over 38 years, John shared his craftsmanship as a butcher at Food Town in Toledo, where he could always be relied upon for his jovial spirit and willingness to lend a helping hand. His personality shone through his fondness for jokes, and those who knew him can attest to the warmth and laughter he brought into their lives.

John was a proud veteran who served his country in the U.S. Navy. His dedication continued throughout his life, evident in the love he poured into his family and the friendships he forged along the way. He shared 41 wonderful years with his wife Pam Riley, in which 24 years of them were in marriage; their bond was one of deep admiration and affection. Together, they were true soulmates, and their love was a testament to the beauty of companionship.

In addition to his successful career, John enjoyed various hobbies that enriched his life. He took pleasure in hunting and fishing, often seeking solace in nature. Estate sales and garage sales became treasure-hunting adventures for him, and he cherished spending time in his workshop at home. John would frequently visit Fox Glove Park, feeding the ducks and squirrels, and that simple joy was an integral part of his life. He also found great pleasure in card games during his younger days and had a deep affection for his dogs, Harvey and Addie, who brought him much joy.

John is survived by his loving wife Pam; his stepdaughter Jen Spolnik and stepson Brent Spolnik; his sisters-in-law Marie Riley, Lynn Dartt and husband Dean, Sue Maciejewski and husband Fred, and Nancy Bourbina and husband Rick; his nephews Steve Riley and Scott Riley; cousins Ruth Ann Carlson and Ken Riley; and a host of extended family members and dear friends.

He was predeceased by his father Ralph Riley, mother Sara Smith and stepfather Norman Smith, sister Dot, and brother Clair Riley.

A visitation will be held in John’s honor on October 23, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a memorial service from 11:00 AM with Military Honors at Newcomer Funeral Home in Northwest Toledo, located at 4150 W Laskey Rd, Toledo, OH 43623.
