John Scott Porterfield (“Scott”), age 75, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, November 12, 2025 in Sylvania, Ohio. He was born December 23, 1949, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Scott was the beloved son of Captain John D. Porterfield and Patsy M. Barrett, and beloved stepson to James J. Barrett. 

Scott is survived by his wife, Marilyn J. Agee, mother, Patsy M. Barrett, and siblings Gary Porterfield (Tonya Porterfield), David Barrett (Judi Barrett), Matthew Barrett (Teresa Barrett), and Jillan Brown (Michael Brown). He also leaves behind two daughters, Jessica Lynn Manley (Joshua Manley) and Molly Rae Heiss (Jay Heiss), as well as two stepsons, Max Glen Lee Evans (Madalyn Evans) and Jack Bob Jesse Evans (Melissa Evans). He was an adored grandpa and poppy, leaving behind eight grandchildren: Henry, Harrison, Ivy, Porter, River, Adelaide, Hugh, and Lillian. His grandchildren loved to sit on his lap and read stories, listen to him talk like Donald Duck, tell jokes, and watch movies. He was predeceased by his father, John D. Porterfield and stepfather James J. Barrett. 

Scott graduated from Morenci High School where he was manager of several sports teams and was awarded homecoming king. Scott joined the Peace Corps at age 22, before completing his senior year of college at Ferris State. Scott was deployed to Ethiopia as a smallpox eradication officer with the World Health Organization, where he spent 28 months working on one of public health’s greatest achievements. Living in Ethiopia was a highlight of his life. After completing his Peace Corps service in 1973, Scott returned to Western Michigan University to finish his B.A. and M.P.A. Scott served in several healthcare administration positions throughout Ohio, including Vice-President of Physician Services at Flower Hospital as well as President and CEO of Provider Solutions and Administrator at the Toledo Clinic. Scott retired in 2017 after 50 years of service in the healthcare field. 

Those who knew Scott will remember him for all of the stories he told, his collection of books, his sense of humor, his excellent cooking skills, and his ability to befriend and have a meaningful conversation with anyone. 

The Celebration of Life open house to honor the life of John Scott Porterfield will be held on Sunday, December 7th, from 2-5 pm at Highland Meadows Golf Club. 7455 Erie St, Sylvania, OH 43560.
