Jay M. Whatmore, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son and friend, passed away in Toledo, Ohio, on July 22, 2025, at the age of 60. Born on September 6, 1964, in Toledo, Jay would go on to leave a significant mark on those fortunate enough to know him.
Jay was a talented steel fabricator who dedicated over thirty-five years to his craft in the Toledo area. His contributions to the industry were noted by many, but it was his vibrant personality that truly defined him. As a jokester at heart, Jay relished in laughter and spent his days creating joy for his family and friends. His affinity for humor was complemented by a love for Rock and Roll music, cooking, and barbequing. He enjoyed playing board and card games with his family, often making amusing memories filled with friendly competition.
Jay was especially proud of his collection of Hawaiian shirts, which reflected his lively spirit. His favorite moments were spent with his grandchildren, where he loved to play and jokingly pick on them. He was very protective of his family and made it a priority to ensure their happiness. Among his proudest accomplishments was the way he crafted unique nicknames for everyone around him, a token of affection that showcased his love and creativity.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Cherie Whatmore, with whom he shared 38 wonderful years of marriage. He is also survived by his cherished children: daughter Christina Thomas and her husband Jeremy, son Jason Whatmore and his wife Katie, as well as his beloved grandchildren: Aubrey Thomas, Austin Thomas, Archer Thomas, Jonah Whatmore, Milo Whatmore, and Stella Whatmore. Jay also leaves behind his father, John Whatmore, sister Jodie Whatmore, his fur baby Otis, and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, and other loving extended family members who will miss him dearly.
Jay is preceded in death by his mother, Janice Whatmore; his uncle, Richard Cochran; his aunt, Judy Cybulski; and his in-laws, Thomas Jacobs, Mildred Jacobs, Florence Jacobs, and brother-in-law Tommy Lorton.
A visitation will be held on July 31, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, Northwest Toledo, located at 4150 W Laskey Rd, Toledo, OH 43623. Following the visitation, a funeral service will take place on August 1, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the same location. A graveside service will also occur on August 1, 2025, at 11:30 AM at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park, 4210 Central Ave, Toledo, OH 43606.
Jay’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, yet his legacy of laughter, love, and joyful spirit will continue to inspire those he touched throughout his life. He will be remembered fondly for his laughter, his protective nature, and his enduring love for his family.
