Janet Rose Gunkel, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, of Toledo, Ohio passed away on October 28, 2025, at Divine Rehabilitation and Nursing at Sylvania. Born on December 15, 1937, in Belleville, Illinois, to George Florreich and Mary Gears.
Janet's calling in life was motherhood, and she spent many years working as a secretary at Temple B'nai Isreal, to support her family. She was known for her diligence, dependability, and warmth. Janet was also a cherished and active member of Epworth United Methodist in Toledo. She will be remembered for her enthusiastic love of animals, and how she found homes and cared for numerous stray cats and dogs. Janet was also an excellent cook; when not in the kitchen, she could be found knitting afghans, scarves, and hats for her loved ones.
Janet is survived by her two devoted sons, Michael D. (Ginger Morgan) Gunkel and Darrin K. (Karin Hedlund) Gunkel, who carry forward her legacy of love and kindness. She took great pride in her role as a grandmother to Alex J. (Taylor) Gunkel. In addition to her family, she is remembered fondly by her brother, David Gears, who remains grateful for the bond they shared.
Janet was preceded in death by her beloved parents, George Florreich and Mary Gears, and sister-in-law, Janet Gears.
Friends and family will be received on Friday, October 31, 2025 from 3:00 PM-7:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd, Toledo, Ohio.
Her life was marked by deep devotion to her family, her love of a good laugh, and her big heart, qualities that will be missed by all who knew her. Janet's spirit will continue to live on through her family and community. All will cherish the memories she created and the love and laughter she shared so warmly.
