James Spencer Lewis

James Spencer Lewis, born on July 29, 1937, in Rutherfordton, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2026, at Majestic Care of Toledo, Ohio, just one day before he turned 89.

After graduating from Woodward High School, where he played football, boxed, and fell deeply in love with Barbara Jean, James went on to build a distinguished career as a dedicated Supervisor for the Ford Motor Company, retiring after 39.9 years of service. His work ethic was legendary. He was the kind of man who never missed a day, famously making it into work and back home even during the historic Blizzard of 1978.

Above all else in his life, James was devoted to serving Jehovah God. As a dedicated, baptized Jehovah’s Witness since August 25,1961, he served as a Ministerial Servant and former Elder. He could regularly be found reading his Bible, immersing himself in the Scriptures day after day. James was a gifted reader and speaker who loved sharing the good news with others. When he spoke from the platform or shared truths from the Scriptures, he was known for putting enthusiasm, heart, and power behind God’s Word. He leaves an enduring spiritual legacy for his family.

James was the devoted husband of his beloved wife, Barbara Jean Lewis, affectionately known as "Barb" or "Barbie." Their marriage of more than 60 years was a beautiful example of enduring love, partnership, and unwavering devotion. Even after her passing, James carried her memory with him, cherishing the life they built together.

With a generous heart, a sharp sense of humor, and a lively spirit, James delighted in celebrating life's special moments—filling his family's lives with memories of vacations, camping trips, and get-togethers. Everyone in the neighborhood knew that he had built a safe, secure, and plentiful home life for his wife and four kids. Whether he was offering a helping hand with a tree, repairing cars, riding motorcycles with his signature "need for speed," swimming, roller skating, playing his guitar, or enjoying a good meal, James brought energy and joy to everything he did.

A devoted father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother, he is survived by his sons, Broderick (Darlene) Lewis, Steven (Caroline) Lewis, and Eric (Crystal) Lewis; his daughter, Janet (Silas) Hobbs; and his brother, Henry (Joyce) Lewis; nine grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren who proudly called him "Pappy."

He was preceded in death by his parents, James W. Lewis and Idell Lewis; beloved wife, Barbara Jean Lewis; his grandson, Delroy S. Chance Jr.; and his sisters, Doris Hester and Kathaleen Hester. James Spencer Lewis leaves behind a rich legacy of compassion, resilience, and faith. His impact endures as a badge of honor for the Lewis family and for all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

A Family Hour will be held on August 3, 2026, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness, located at 224 Lemoyne Rd, Northwood, OH 43619. This will be followed by a Memorial Service at the same location at 7:00 p.m., where friends and loved ones are invited to gather and celebrate a life well-lived.
