Listen to Obituary

With hearts full of both sorrow and gratitude, we announce the passing of James Earl Shull, who entered eternal rest on April 13, 2026, in Toledo, Ohio at the age of 83. James, known as Jim, was born to the late Earl Franklin and Amelia Mae (Matchett) Shull on June 12, 1942 in Toledo, Ohio. Throughout his life, Jim displayed remarkable strength, grace, and unwavering love to all those who had the chance to know him. A devoted family man, Jim lived his life with steadfast commitment to his family, quiet strength, and an open heart.

He leaves behind a legacy his family will carry forward: "He taught his sons how to throw a knuckleball and excel in sports, to keep their word, and showed them what a devoted father and husband looks like in action.” We carry these happy memories and strive to live out the life lessons he exemplified.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Kathy (Koester) Shull, and stepson, Dalton (Nikki) Koester and 1 granddaughter (Leona); 3 sons from his first marriage to Judith Ann (Kinkaid) Shull, who preceded him in death in 2000: Matt (Vickey) Shull of New Albany, Ohio, Mark (Chris) Shull of Marietta, Georgia, and Mike (Cheri) Shull of Holland, Ohio, together with 8 grandchildren: Jessica (Greg) Wetzel, Garrett (Desireé) Shull, Olivia (Sam) Nunner; Jackson and Cooper Shull; Reagan, Reese, and Corinne Shull; 3 great-grandchildren: Cooper and Sloane Wetzel and Rose Nunner.

A private interment service will be held on Friday, April 24, 2026 at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Following the service, friends and family are invited to a gathering and celebration of life to be held from 1 to 3 PM at Collingwood Presbyterian Church, located at 2108 Collingwood Blvd, Toledo, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations on behalf of Jim can be made to Collingwood Presbyterian Church.
