James H. Petty, a cherished member of the Toledo community, passed away on September 25, 2024 in Maumee, Ohio, at the age of 98. Born on February 7, 1926, in Miamisburg, Ohio, James lived a life marked by dedication, hard work, and compassion.
A graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Dayton, James began his professional journey in mortgage banking at the Kissell Company, later moving onto People's Savings Bank. His career culminated as President of Peoples Savings and then Charter One Bank, where he retired in 1991. During his career, he was known for his unwavering commitment to helping individuals and families financially secure their homes. He assisted many people in obtaining mortgages and aided builders who developed local subdivisions, making lasting contributions to the community's growth. Even after retiring, he continued to impact lives through his charitable work with Habitat for Humanity, providing homes for families in need. Jim and his wife Phyllis attended St. Joan of Arc Catholic Parish on Heatherdowns.
James proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II, a testament to his dedication and sacrifice for his country. His roots in service laid a foundation for a life filled with integrity and responsibility. One of Jim's proudest moments was his ability to take part of the World War II Honor Flight to Washington D.C. on September 24, 2019.
He is fondly remembered by family and friends for his love of outdoor activities, including fishing and boating on Lake Erie, along with tennis and racquetball. Family memories encapsulate joyful moments spent at the zoo, trips to Amish Country, winters in Perdido Key, Florida and Red's baseball games. James cherished afternoons watching golf, especially during cold winter months, and trips with his wife of 67 years, Phyllis.
James is survived by his loving children, Donna Danekind (and husband John), Barbara Cochrane (and husband Ron), James K. Petty (and wife Maria), Alice Bruhn (and husband Steve), Lori Miller (and husband Mike). He also leaves behind his dear sister, Nancy Hickey (and husband Jerry), and sister Leslie King (and husband David), along with a bounty of grandchildren—Sean, Carrie, Ronnie, Josh, Julia, Justin, Chelsea, Shannon, Rachel, and Aaron—as well as 19 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his extended family and numerous friends.
James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Phyllis Petty, and his granddaughter, Rhonda Barker. He was also preceded by his brothers, Charles, Donald, and Phillip Petty, and sisters Jeanne Lambert, Carol Groh, and Margery Howard.
