James A. Kraus, age 88, passed away peacefully in his home on July 15,2023. Son of the late Harold and Leona (Mallot) Kraus. Beloved husband of the late Judith Kraus. Father of Cheryl (Mitch) Lay, Allen Kraus and Jennifer Kraus. Grandfather of Megan, Kevin, Jessica, Sara and James. Great grandfather of Nash, Blake, Dakota, Bailey, Oakley and Forrester. Brother of Carolyn (Frank) Byrd, Jacklyn Thomas, Tamara Golden and the late Donald and Gene Kraus.
Jim lived a very active life. His childhood included many moves and resulted in his attending 13 different schools. His thirst for knowledge included reading the dictionary cover to cover to fill educational gaps. Graduating in 1954 from Whitmer High School he was a proud Panther and attended many alumni luncheons.
He served in the United States Army Artillery from 1957-59 where he was stationed in Darmstadt, Germany. His career path included pipe organ tuner and builder, appliance repairman, Stationary Engineer at LOF, and St. Luke's Hospital where he retired in 1999. His hobbies included: Playing dobro, acoustic and pedal steel guitar. Jim was a talented self taught musician and played in many bands, most notably Southbound, Silvercreek and Whiskey Before Breakfast well into his late 70's. He will be dearly missed by his many band mates. He also enjoyed golfing (attaining a hole in one at Fallen Timbers), playing cards, building and flying model airplanes, racing slot cars, drag racing at Milan speedway, competitive archery, CB radio and motorcycles.
Jim's family would like to graciously thank Deanne, Guardian Angels Shareen, Jodie, Nancy, Heather and Joy, as well as Hospice of NW Ohio for their loving care.
A Memorial visitation will be held on Sunday July 30th, 2023 from 12:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home- Southwest Chapel 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. Toledo,OH 43614 (419-381-1900).
