Listen to Obituary

James Holmes, Jr., affectionately known as “JR,” was a loving father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He was born on May 29, 1980, to Sheila J. Martin and James E. Holmes, Sr., and departed this life at the age of 45.

From a young age, JR’s energy and zest for life could fill any room. He loved playing basketball, had a passion for old-school cars—especially those with booming subwoofers—and enjoyed shooting pool, playing his PS5, and repping his beloved Dallas Cowboys. Win or lose, JR was going to talk his talk, laugh loud, and keep everyone smiling. JR was a true hustler and entrepreneur at heart, always finding a way to create, build, and succeed. In his later years, he became a talented carpenter, taking pride in his home improvement work. He was also a gifted barber, known for cutting hair in his “Cowboys Nation” man cave. Whatever JR set his mind to, he learned it, perfected it, and made it his own.

As a father, JR’s love ran deep. He was protective over his children—from his first born to his last—and always made sure they knew how much he loved them. He was proud of each one: he was deeply involved in Jamon’s football, cheering him on at every game with unmatched pride; he loved helping Saevion put together his basketball hoop, enjoying those little moments that meant so much; he was so excited when his only daughter, Jamiyah, moved back to Toledo, having her close again filled him with joy; and he always looked out for Jamarr, making sure he was good and cared for in every way. His children were his world, and everything he did was for them.

JR also had a passion for breeding pit bulls, and if you knew him, you knew he did not play about his dogs! As a brother, JR’s loyalty and love knew no limits. His only brother, Princeton Gaines, meant the world to him. Through good times and bad, JR always had Princeton’s back—no matter what. They shared an unbreakable bond built on love, laughter, and brotherhood. With his sister Chelsey, JR was the kind of big brother every girl needed. He loved her deeply and showed up not only for her but for her kids, too. He kept their hair fresh with haircuts and always made time to give them that “uncle advice,” reminding them to stay focused, respectful, and strong. His sister Markita held a very special place in his heart—she was his first baby before he ever became a dad. From the moment she was born, JR adored her and took his role as big brother seriously. He supported her throughout life, offering guidance, laughter, and love whenever she needed it. Their bond was unshakable, built on years of shared memories, protection, and endless love.

As a son, JR was dependable and loving. He shared a special bond with his mother, Sheila, and never hesitated to show affection or step in when she or anyone else needed him. He was protective over those he loved and had a heart big enough to hold everyone close. With his girlfriend, Heather Nuszbaum, JR shared a beautiful, genuine love. Together, they created a home full of laughter and comfort. They enjoyed the simple things—making Kool-Aid, watching their favorite shows, and laughing together at comedians until their sides hurt. Heather stood faithfully by his side through everything, and their bond was one of love, loyalty, and joy.

JR was truly one of a kind—full of life, laughter, jokes, and love. He was the type of person who left an impression everywhere he went. His energy, smile, and spirit were contagious.

He was preceded in death by his father, James E. Holmes, Sr., and his sister, Tiffany R. Holmes-Moore.He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Sheila Martin; his children, Jamiyah E. Holmes, Jamarr E. Holmes, Jamon E. Holmes, and Saevion Cathey; his siblings, Princeton Gaines, Markita McCoy, and Chelsey Neese; his favorite cousins, Chris and Marlania “MoMo”; his loving and supportive girlfriend, Heather Nuszbaum; and a host of other family members and friends who will forever carry his memory in their hearts. JR lived, laughed, and loved with his whole heart. His life was a reflection of strength, loyalty, and love—and though he will be missed beyond measure, his light will continue to shine through everyone who had the blessing of knowing him.
