James E. Berbec, a proud Marine and beloved musician, was born on January 2, 1951, in Toledo, Ohio. He passed away on June 20, 2025, also in Toledo, leaving behind cherished memories of a life dedicated to service and music.
Throughout his career, James worked as a truck driver, traversing the vast landscapes of our great country. His knack for navigating the highways allowed him to explore far and wide, contributing to his life experiences. However, it was his love for music that truly resonated with those who knew him. Graduating from Findlay University with a degree in music, James displayed his extraordinary talent in playing various musical instruments. He often played the organ for his mother and family, sharing the gift of music and creating beautiful memories.
James was not only a gifted musician but also a devoted Marine who served his country with pride during the Viet Nam era in the U.S. Marine Corps, spending four years in force recon. His service was a point of great pride for him, reflecting his deep commitment to his country and its values.
A private individual at heart, James found joy in the simple pleasures of life, including his well-tended yard and his home. He cherished the companionship of his best friend, Polly, a parakeet that brought him comfort and happiness. His dedication to family was evident in his care for his mother and brother, Butch.
James is survived by his nephew Edward Kurek and his wife Karissa; his niece Susan Speiker and her husband Jon; his nephew Matt Kurek and his wife Tracey; his nephew Nick Kurek and his wife Melissa; his niece Theresa Slater and her husband Jeff; and his cousin John Dressel and Cary, along with cousin Lynn Yarnboon and her husband Steve. He also leaves behind a host of great nieces, nephews, extended family members, and, of course, his beloved parakeet, Polly.
James now joins in eternal rest his father, Edward Berbec; his mother, Helen Berbec (Dressel); his sister, Judy Kurek; and his brother, Butch Berbec. Their spirits will undoubtedly forever be intertwined as they watch over the family he loved so dearly.
