Jacquelyn "Jackie" (Britter) Smoot, a beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2025, in her cherished hometown of Toledo, Ohio. Born on March 10, 1952, Jackie lived a life marked by kindness, laughter, and unwavering faith.
Jackie graduated from Jesup W. Scott High School on June 9, 1970, and continued her journey of learning at Davis College and the University of Toledo. With a career that spanned over five decades, including 20 years at Blue Cross Blue Shield/Medical Mutual as an administrative assistant, followed by 23 years serving various departments for the City of Toledo, including in affirmative action, public utilities, and streets, bridges, and harbors. Her contributions were invaluable, and she left a lasting impact on her colleagues before she retired on June 30, 2025.
A woman of deep faith, Jackie was a devoted member of Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church for over 20 years and Friendly Missionary Baptist Church for over 25 years, where she served as an usher. Her spirituality was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her in every endeavor.
Those who knew Jackie remember her as patient and loving, with a witty sense of humor that could light up any room. She was known for her exceptional talents as a seamstress, creating beautiful outfits for her family, and also crafted baptismal robes for her church. Jackie's love for cooking and baking filled her home with warmth and delightful aromas. She had a particular fondness for house plants and found joy in nurturing them. An avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and The Ohio State Buckeyes, Jackie cherished the camaraderie of sports and watched games with unbridled enthusiasm. Among her many joys, attending the Cincinnati Jazz Festival brought her immense happiness and fulfillment.
Jackie leaves behind her children, John (Tammy) Smoot, Jr. and Jabrea (Te'Arle) Spears, and her grandchildren, Shalayia Jackson, Jabrea Smoot, SaCora Smoot, John Smoot III, Te'Arle Spears Jr., Aaliyah Perkins, and Braelyn Spears. She is also survived by her siblings, Kenneth Britter of Germantown, Maryland, Gloria Smith of Toledo, Ohio, and Alonzo (Pete) Jenkins of Toledo, Ohio, as well as her former husband, John Smoot, Sr. and many other loved ones and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wheeler and Elvine Britter, and her sisters, Shirley Johnson, Kay Sudduth, Delores Hutchen, June Britter-Williams, Joan Nelson and Anita Harris. Their memories will continue to live on in the hearts of those she loved and who loved her in return.
Jackie's legacy of kindness, laughter, and faith shall forever remain a bright light in the lives of her family and friends. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered as a loving matriarch who touched the lives of so many.
The family will receive guests on Friday, November 7, 2025 from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home - Southwest Chapel, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd, Toledo. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at Noon at Friendly Missionary Baptist Church, 1305 Parkside Blvd, Toledo.
