Gary Schulz, age 76, beloved father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2025, in his hometown of Toledo, Ohio. Born on January 12, 1949, Gary was known for his warmth, kindness, strength, and steadfast dedication to those he loved.
An alumnus of the University of Toledo and The Ohio State University, Gary dedicated most of his professional years to General Mills, as a Quality Control Manager, until his retirement in 2004. His professional journey was marked by his ability to create workable partnerships with colleagues based on mutual respect and a genuine interest in the good of the whole team. This philosophy of diplomacy and sincere concern for others also defined his personal life.
After a few years of post-collegiate life, which included traveling the country in his VW van, attending Woodstock, running into the likes of John Sinclair and Iggy Pop in Ann Arbor, and attending as many live rock concerts as time would allow, he met and fell in love with his beloved wife Mary Bates-Schulz. During their 32 years together, they had 3 children and 8 grandchildren, who are an enduring legacy of Gary and Mary’s love and devotion to each other and to their commitment to family.
In social gatherings, Gary was often the life of the party, embodying a spirit of joy that drew people near. He was a friend and mentor to many, known for his caring demeanor and easygoing nature. He stressed the importance of “going the extra mile” and lived by this in all realms of life. An avid enthusiast of music, cars and sports, Gary found immense joy in the simple pleasures in life. Many cherished memories were created with family adventures at the lake, where he enjoyed taking his boat out and spending time with his loved ones. Other favorite pastimes included attending Detroit Tigers baseball games, OSU Football games, vacationing in Florida, the Outer Banks, and the beaches of Mexico, as well as spending time with his buddies and attending his children and grandchildren’s sporting events.
After losing Mary in 2010, Gary found himself beginning a new and unexpected chapter in his life which led to forming a friendship, then loving relationship with Chris. Together they enjoyed a shared love for travel, concerts and living and volunteering in the Old West End neighborhood of Toledo.
It was during this last chapter that Gary faced a 12-year battle with cancer, demonstrating remarkable resilience and strength. His fight inspired all who knew him, as he overcame every obstacle that came his way- a true testament to his indomitable spirit. Forever “Iron-man” to those who knew and loved him.
It should be noted that in Gary’s lifetime (1949-2025) The Ohio State University led the University of Michigan, 40-32, including their history making national championship run in 2024. Go Bucks!
Gary is survived by his sons, Todd Schulz (Kim), Troy Schulz (Jenni), his daughter Jena Stuckey (Josh), partner and companion, Christine Parks; grandchildren, Tyler Carr-Schulz, Morgan Schulz, Layton Schulz, Londyn Schulz, Brooklin Schulz, Olivia Schulz, Juliana Stuckey, Jaxon Stuckey; his sister Pam Schmidt ( Jason); and a host of family and friends who will dearly miss him.
Gary was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Bates- Schulz, who passed away in 2010, as well as his brother Carl Schulz Jr., and his parents Carl Schulz Sr. and Emmeret Schulz.
Gary Schulz leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering support that will continue to inspire those who were lucky enough to know him. His children and grandchildren were undoubtedly his proudest accomplishments, and his memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of his family and friends.
Upon Gary’s request, there will be no services at this time. A celebration of life and private burial will be held at a later date.
