Gary Keith Hauter, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away at his home on Sunday July 5, 2026. Born on December 25, 1955, in Toledo, Ohio, Gary’s life was defined by his unwavering dedication to his family, community, and the many people whose lives he touched along the way.

Gary was a proud graduate of Sylvania High School’s class of 1973. He continued his education at Lakeland in Kirtland, Ohio, where he received his associate’s degree in 1986. His commitment to service began early in life, and he answered the call to serve his country as a member of the Navy. Gary carried the discipline, integrity, and spirit of camaraderie fostered during his military service into every facet of his life.

Following his time in the armed forces, Gary found his professional calling with the Broward Sheriff’s Office in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. There, he served with distinction as a Deputy Sheriff and particularly loved his role as a Field Training Officer, where he helped mentor and guide new deputies. Gary approached his work with a compassionate heart and a strong sense of duty, reflecting his lifelong passion for helping others and spreading kindness.

Gary’s zest for life shone brightly outside of work. He had an enduring love for music, especially southern rock legends like Lynyrd Skynyrd, and was an accomplished musician himself. Whether playing guitar, bass, or drums, singing, or leading as the front man in various bands, he brought joy and energy to every performance. His talents extended to golfing, camping, motorcycling, and simply embracing the great outdoors. Gary was known for his warm presence, his remarkable ability to make people smile, and above all, his genuine love for being with others.

One of Gary’s proudest accomplishments was marrying Susan on May 12, 2001. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, enduring partnership, and deep affection. Gary leaves behind his cherished wife Susan Hauter; his loving children Erin (Jason) Johnson, Sarah Hauter, and Matthew Blandino; and his treasured grandchildren Gabriella, Nicholas, Carley, Lily, Hailee, Arabella, and Wyatt. He is also survived by his sister Diane Savory, nephew Michael (Kendra) Savory, nephew Eric Hauter, and niece Julie Heidelburg.

Gary was preceded in death by his father Harold Hauter, his mother Helen Hauter, and his brother Robert Hauter. Their memories remained close to his heart throughout his life.

Family, friends, colleagues, and all whose lives Gary brightened are invited to honor his memory during visitation on Friday, July 24, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 5:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southwest Toledo, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd, Toledo, OH 43614.
