Frieder Kempf, age 89, of Toledo, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2025.
Born on July 10, 1936, in Wertheim, Germany, Frieder was the fifth of ten children born to Wilhelm and Emilie Kempf. In 1954, at the age of 17, he bravely immigrated to the United States in search of opportunity. Shortly after his arrival, he joined the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, Local 7, beginning a lifelong career in which he worked in some of the finest homes in the region. Frieder was a true master of his craft: meticulous, dedicated, and incredibly proud of the work he created. Не remained a committed union member for nearly 70 years.
Frieder met his wife, Erika, also a German immigrant, and together they built a beautiful life from the ground up. Married for 49 years until her passing, their partnership was defined by deep love and shared heritage. Frieder played soccer in his younger years and was an active member of The Bavarian Sports Club, Toledo Schwaben Verein, and the Toledo Barton-Smith Lodge of the Free Masons. Through these communities, he formed lifelong friendships and nurtured traditions rooted in their German heritage. Friday nights at "The Club" were a treasured ritual filled with fellowship, stories, and camaraderie. For nearly 20 years, Frieder volunteered at the German American Festival, often working late into the night to help ensure the event's success. For his children, some of their fondest memories are accompanying him on those evenings, watching his work ethic in action. In retirement, Frieder and Erika enjoyed traveling, especially their winters spent in Arizona. One of the great highlights of his later years was a mission trip to Africa, an experience that left a lasting impression on him.
Frieder is survived by his children Cindy (Doug) Lawrence and Ron (Moira) Kempf; his grandchildren Emily (Patrick), Betsy (Travis), and Patrick (Stephanie); and his great-granddaughters Layla, Lydia, and Nora. To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was lovingly known as "Opa" and each of them held a special place in his heart. He is also survived by three sisters in Germany, and many nieces and nephews, here in the US and in Germany.
Above all, Frieder will be remembered for his commitment to family and his willingness to help by lending his skills or giving his time. His legacy of craftsmanship, loyalty and generosity is reflected in the life he built, the family he cherished, and the traditions he kept alive.
