Fred VanKoughnet, age 87 of Toledo, Ohio passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family and friends at St. Anne's Hospital. He was born in Toledo, Ohio to William and Mary (Cooper) VanKoughnet. Fred graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1956. He then graduated from the University of Michigan in 1960 with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and later from the University of Toledo with an MBA. Fred proudly served as an Officer in the U.S. Navy (active and reserve duty), both stateside and in South America and Asia.
Early in his professional life, Fred worked as an engineer for Jones & Henry and for the City of Toledo in the traffic division. After moving away from the traditional workplace, he pursued several entrepreneurial ventures including rental properties, a green house and Mark Rite Products.
But his true passions were tennis and gardening. He was a formidable opponent on the tennis court. Fred's garden always featured not only unique vegetables, but the tastiest varieties. Fred remained a lifelong U of M sports fan, especially football. Fred was well read and enjoyed engaging in discussions regarding current events and relevant world history. He would also impressively share detailed memories from his U.S. Navy days to younger generation family members.
Fred is survived by his sisters, Beth (Tom) Gettins and Chris (Gary) Grachek; sisters-in-law, Terry VanKoughnet and Chris VanKoughnet and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Fred was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, William (Terry) VanKoughnet and Lewis (Chris) VanKoughnet.
