Fred C. Vogeli, age 82, a longtime resident of Riga, Michigan, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Toledo. Born December 6, 1942, in Toledo, Fred was the son of Frederick and Mildred (Geis) Vogeli, Sr. He graduated from Whiteford Agriculture, and devoted more than 31 years of service to General Motors, retiring in 2001.
Fred was well-known for his adventurous spirit and love of the outdoors. An avid hunter, he found immense joy in fresh water and ice fishing also, often embarking on trips to Canada and Northern Michigan with friends to enjoy these passions. His adventures included memorable salmon fishing excursions at the picturesque Manistee River area, where laughter and camaraderie filled the air.
In addition to his outdoor pursuits of hunting and trapshooting, Fred cultivated his interests in taxidermy and scuba diving, reflecting his diverse hobbies. He was also a dedicated reader, absorbing everything from thrilling Western tales to informative historical books that explored military events. Fred embraced friendly competition, enjoying card games with favorites such as Euchre and poker.
A long-time member of the Monroe Rod & Gun Club, he was also actively involved with the Ottawa Lake Sportsman Club, participating in wild game dinners and card parties that brought friends together. Among his many passions, Fred cherished the moments spent with family, particularly the treasured time spent with his grandson, Joshua. Together, they shared a special bond, exemplified by the secret handshake that Fred developed, a symbol of their affection.
Fred's love extended to his family and household pets. He adored spending time working in his barn, maintaining his lawn with pride on his beloved riding mower. An animal lover at heart, he welcomed numerous pets into his home, including his faithful canine companions Rozlynn, Max, Sam, Spike, and his beloved cat, Tom.
Fred met and married Kristine "Tina" Hultz on December 29, 1986. Together, they crafted a life rich in love, adventure, and meaningful experiences. Their shared journeys took them across the United States, as well as to beautiful Costa Rica and Hawaii, where they created a treasure trove of cherished memories together.
In addition to his parents, Fred was also preceded in death by his son, Todd; sisters, Jan Dusza and Betty McCormick; grandson, Jimmy Lykins and son-in-law, James Lykins. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 38 1/2 years, Kristine "Tina" Vogeli; sons, Raymond (Christine) Vogeli and Michael (Shonda) Skahill; daughters, Kelli Lykins and LaRay (Kerry) Eberhardt; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sister, Joan Green and many dear nieces, nephews and close friends, Kenny Kohls, Jeff Shepard and John Neil.
He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and a deep love for family that will be remembered by all who knew him.
Visitation for Fred will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2025, from 2:00 - 7:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, NW Chapel, 4150 West Laskey Road (419-473-0300). The funeral service will follow Thursday evening beginning at 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
