Esther P. “Tootie” Tucker, age 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 16th. Tootie was born on July 10, 1934, in Toledo to Myrtle and Alvin Welch. She grew up in the greater Toledo area and attended Bedford High School where she was a majorette.
After high school she worked as a waitress at the Secor Grill then at Brauer’s Delicatessen for 25 years before attending and graduating from Ma’Chere Beauty Academy. She continued her career at the Jobst Corp as a seamstress and retired after 23 years.
Tootie was an active member of the Church of St. Andrew. She served as the Key Lady and Historian for The Friendly Center of Toledo, was a member of the Maumee Senior Center, and volunteered at Wildwood Manor House. She also held the title of Queen Mother of the Plum Reddies, her local chapter of the Red Hat Society.
She is survived by her loving son Stephen (Edith) Askins; Grandchildren Emily (Mark) Kleeberger, Tony Askins, Nick Askins, and Sarah (Nick) Lindsey; great-grandchildren William Kleeberger, Kathryn Kleeberger, Noah Lindsey, Eli Lindsey, and Maizy Askins; many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Kay Dawes, sister Edith Lopinski, sister Marjorie Johnson,and brother Reverend Glenn Welch.
Friends and family may gather at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3655 King Road, Toledo, Ohio, on Thursday, August 21st at 10am, followed by a service at 12:00n.Private family burial to follow.
